Web Development Essentials with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Create responsive websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Every modern web application starts with the same core foundations: structure, styling, and interactivity. On this introductory course, you’ll learn how the web works and use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create responsive, interactive pages from the ground up.
Start by exploring how browsers, servers, and HTTP work together to deliver websites. You’ll then use semantic HTML to structure content including text, links, images, forms, and tables, while considering accessibility from the outset.
Shape flexible layouts with CSS
Move from structure into presentation as you work with the CSS box model, flexbox, and grid. You’ll learn how responsive design helps pages adapt across different screen sizes and practise creating layouts that remain clear and usable across devices.
Add interaction with JavaScript
Explore JavaScript fundamentals including variables, data types, functions, conditionals, loops, arrays, and objects. You’ll then manipulate the Document Object Model (DOM), respond to user events, and use modern ES6+ features to bring pages to life.
Bring your front-end skills together
Apply HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a complete responsive multi-page website. Along the way, you’ll establish the practical foundation needed to progress into component-based front-end development with React.
By the end, you’ll understand how websites are structured, styled, and made interactive, and you’ll have created a working web project using the core technologies of front-end development.
Syllabus
Week 1
Web Foundations and Semantic HTML
Starting the Web Development Journey
Examine how browsers, servers, and HTTP work together to deliver web pages. Prepare the development environment and explore where AI assistance supports development and where human judgement remains essential.
Planning Development and Structuring Web Content
Structure web pages with semantic elements, headings, paragraphs, and lists. Use links, images, and relative paths to connect content while applying accessibility principles for clear navigation.
HTML Tables, Forms, and Validation
Organise tabular information with captions and headers, and collect input through appropriately labelled form controls. Check HTML validity, browser validation, and keyboard access to improve usability and page structure.
Week 2
CSS Styling and Responsive Design
Understanding CSS Rules and Element Sizing
Explore how selectors, the cascade, and inheritance determine an element’s appearance. Apply shared styles and inspect the box model with browser DevTools to understand element sizing, spacing, and document flow.
Creating Flexible and Responsive Layouts
Arrange content using Flexbox and Grid, selecting each approach according to layout requirements. Apply media queries, breakpoints, and flexible sizing to create pages that adapt across desktop, tablet, and mobile screens.
Styling Interaction States and Verifying CSS
Style form controls, hover effects, and keyboard focus to provide clear interaction feedback. Diagnose cascade and layout issue, review targeted AI suggestions, and verify responsive behaviour and visual accessibility across pages
Week 3
JavaScript Fundamentals and Browser Interactivity
Understanding JavaScript Programming
Develop a foundation in variables, data types, operators, conditionals, loops, and functions. Work with arrays and objects to access, filter, and sort data, using console output to trace execution and check results.
DOM Manipulation and Event-Driven Interfaces
Connect JavaScript logic to web pages through DOM updates and browser events. Implement search, combined filters, empty-result messages, and form feedback, then organise code using modern syntax and modules.
Asynchronous Data and JavaScript Debugging
Load and display JSON data using Fetch, promises, and async/await. Handle loading and error states, investigate problems with DevTools and Claude Code, and verify website behaviour before extending the implementation.
