Inclusive practice is essential to the development of interpersonal skills and reflective thinking used throughout academic and professional life.

On this three-week course from the University of York, you’ll learn to approach student life with an appreciation of the advantages and disadvantages that exist for different groups. This understanding will allow you to communicate in academic and social situations with openness and empathy.

Investigate concepts of inclusive education, including equity and diversity

Fostering an inclusive learning environment within higher education helps to create more welcoming communities, giving individuals a sense of belonging.

On this course, you’ll explore the key principles of inclusive practice. You’ll cover topics including decolonisation, language, the online world, accessibility, and inclusive sustainable living.

Explore how to create more inclusive learning environments in higher education

Inclusive learning can encourage free expression and enrich the whole community.

You’ll learn how you, as a student, can improve inclusive practices across your institution, including diverse curriculum development. With the tools provided in this course, you can put these ideas into practice, through student partnership and engagement.

Having explored inclusive practice within higher education settings, you’ll broaden your view and look at global and critical perspectives on inclusion.

But what do they actually mean for you as the student? This course explores inclusive practice in higher education and its links to other key concepts, placing student experience and engagement at the forefront. How can you get involved in promoting inclusive learning and teaching, and what role can you play in facilitating an inclusive learning environment? Most importantly, how can you make a positive change within your institution?

Skip to 0 minutes and 39 seconds Designed by students for students, this course draws on the personal experiences and perspectives of students and staff from across the University of York, but is aimed at any student at any stage of their Higher Education journey, whether you are about to enter into university, or are completing a PhD. Over the span of three weeks, you will engage in discussions around a number of underlying principles to develop your understanding of inclusive learning and explore how to make higher education environments more accessible, engaging and welcoming for everyone. The course explores topics including decolonisation, language, accessibility, community, belonging, and student partnerships.

  • Week 1

    Inclusive practice: The Foundations

    • Introduction to Inclusive Learning for Students

      Welcome to the course! We start with a welcome video from one of the lead educators, cover course guidelines and also offer an opportunity to introduce yourself and meet fellow learners for the first time.

    • The Guiding Principles of Inclusive Learning

      We kick off week one by introducing some key principles of inclusive learning and breaking down what 'inclusion' and 'inclusive practice' might mean to you as a student.

    • Building Blocks of Inclusive Communication: Language

      This activity will encourage you to think about the role of language in inclusive communication.

    • Building Blocks of Inclusive Communication: Discussions

      This final activity will look into another aspect of inclusive communication, discussions!

  • Week 2

    Incorporating Inclusive Practice into your Student Life

    • Tools for Accessibility

      To kick off week 2, learners will be introduced to the concept of 'Accessibility'. How does this link with inclusive practice? Who is accessibility for? Why is it important? And what can I do as a student to promote accessibility?

    • Critical Engagement in an Online World

      This next activity will look at the online world and how we use it, including how to be reflective in regards to inclusive practice.

    • Inclusive Communities and Belonging

      This activity will take a look at what it means for a community to be 'inclusive' and why belonging is so important in higher education.

    • Student Partnership and Engagement

      This activity examines the role of 'student partnership and engagement' in promoting inclusive learning in higher education.

  • Week 3

    Global and Critical Perspectives on Inclusive Practice

    • Inclusive Practice Beyond Higher Education

      In this activity we place inclusive practice into the wider context of lifelong learning beyond higher education and think about why it is important to introduce the principles of inclusive learning at this stage in education.

    • Decolonising and Diversifying the Curriculum: Part I

      In this activity we'll take a look at the origins of the decolonising the curriculum movement, and define the term 'decolonising and diversifying the curriculum' in a bit more detail...

    • Decolonising and Diversifying the Curriculum: Part II

      Continuing on from the previous activity, Decolonising and Diversifying the Curriculum part 2 encourages learners to think about the importance of diverse perspectives and narratives in higher education learning and teaching.

    • The Changing Nature of Inclusion

      You've reached the final activity of the course- well done! This last section encourages some final reflections on what you have learnt over the last three weeks...

    • Drawing Things to a Close

      We have reached the end of the course, so a time for final reflections and a test for those who have upgraded
