Gain skills for working in a team

Being able to work in a team is a crucial skill that is transferable across many industries and roles.

On this four-week course, you’ll develop your ability to work with others to become a valuable member of any team.

You’ll gain insights and practical skills to help you become more self-aware, understand group dynamics, and boost your motivation to find a job that aligns with your personality and career goals.

Learn how to practise self-awareness

First, you’ll delve into the practices of self-awareness, curiosity, and self-reflection to help you understand your potential and where you fit in a team.

You’ll also create a space for thoughtful consideration of your role at work to help you explore mindfulness and effectively manage anxiety and stress.

Understand your influence at work

With a deeper understanding of yourself, you’ll learn how to use your authority, power, and influence at work.

You’ll investigate your identities and intersectionality, gaining insights into projection and learning how to improve your assertiveness.

Learn how to navigate group dynamics

In the final week, you’ll unravel the complexities of group dynamics. You’ll gain an understanding of how groups behave and explore the bigger picture of organisational culture.

This will help you develop a holistic view of conflict and systems thinking to help you navigate group dynamics effectively.

Learning from the experts at Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, you’ll finish the course with the tools and skills to excel in a team environment.

  • Week 1

    Understanding yourself

    • Welcome to the course and introducing week 1

      Welcome to the first week of this course! Here's a taster of what is to come and what the course covers. We'll introduce ourselves to you and talk about why we made this course, and what you can get out of it.

    • Looking below-the-surface at work

      Introducing the idea of the Unconscious. Thinking about how you show up at work and what you and others in your team might be doing, unconsciously. Exploring your unconscious with the Creative and Defensive Icebergs

    • Becoming more self-aware

      Discovering how much you share at work, and what you might not want to share. The Awareness Window. How self-aware are you and how much trust is there? What might others notice about you? How useful is feedback from others?

    • Becoming more mindful

      Understanding how useful feelings can be and becoming more aware of them. Exploring the practice of mindfulness and the many benefits of mindfulness at work

  • Week 2

    Working with other people

    • Introduction to week 2 - Identity & Intersectionality

      What's coming up in week 2 - Identity & Intersectionality. How do your various identities affect what happens at work? The Ladder of Intersectionality and making your own

    • Projecting & Taking in

      How we may project our 'bad' parts into other people, unconsciously, and noticing when we're doing it. How we may let other people project their 'bad' parts into us - noticing this too. Do we need to accept these projections?

    • Finding your voice: Influencing, Assertiveness & Listening well

      How you influence - through both pushing and pulling. How do you influence in different situations? A 5-step practice to increase your assertiveness. The importance of learning how to listen well - active listening

    • Finding your voice: managing Anxiety & Stress

      Exploring strategies for managing stress and anxiety. Understanding your own reactions and responses. Finding a balance - increasing beneficial and reducing harmful stress, Learning about techniques to stay calm and accessible

  • Week 3

    Your role at work

    • Introduction to week 3 & BART

      What's coming up in Week 3 and BART – exploring ideas around: what are Boundaries at work; how to take up your Authority; what is your Role and what is the Task, at work. Leadership and Followership. Who has the power at work?

    • Authority at work

      What is Authority at work? Leadership is not just for Managers and the CEO but for everyone. Leaders need followers like followers need leaders. Your own personal authority – being the author of your own story

    • Boundaries!

      What are boundaries, at work? Why are they useful to think about? Plus, the possibility of playing with them...

    • Power at work

      What is power and where is it held? How you use your own power at work in different situations. Looking at the different sources of power

  • Week 4

    Understanding groups at work

    • Introduction to week 4 & Group Dynamics

      What’s coming up in Week 4 – what’s your experience of being in a group? Groupishness - and the ways a group can behave when it is anxious. GroupThink and how that can affect a group.

    • How organisations work - the bigger picture

      Zooming out - thinking about the whole organisation and beyond. Exploring Systems Thinking and organisational culture: “the way we do things here”

    • Putting it all together

      Looking at the bigger picture - the wider system - the whole. How might conflict start at work? People as-a-whole, and the organisation as-a-whole, rather than as separate parts

    • Course wrap-up and continuing the learning

      What we covered in Week 4 and looking back on the whole course. How have you found it? What have you learned? Thinking about the future - what you might do next...
