    The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) provides the opportunity to develop your craft in the classroom.

    On this school-based teacher training course, you can enjoy the flexibility of online learning alongside practical in-school experience, as you study and train while working in a school.

    You’ll be encouraged to apply a variety of teaching theories and methods to help develop your own teaching approach.

    You’ll have the opportunity to build confidence and harness your ability to transfer knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to your pupils.

    Prior experience of teaching in schools is not a prerequisite for this course.

    To gain entry to the course, you must:

    • Have achieved a standard equivalent to a Grade-4 (C grade) GCSE in English and Mathematics. For those training to teach pupils aged 3-11, a Grade-4 (C grade) in a Science subject is also required
    • Hold an undergraduate degree, or equivalent as assessed by NARIC
    • Have taken part in a rigorous selection process to assess your suitability to train to teach, and undergone suitable background checks with regard to the Keeping Children Safe in Education statutory guidance, including enhanced DBS check

    Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall.

    * This course is accredited by the Department for Education for Qualified Teacher Status for the April 2021, September 2021, January 2022 and April 2022 intakes.     On successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

    • Teach effectively and skilfully so that all pupils in your lessons progress and learn well

    • Develop a reflective and self-critical approach to analyse and foster skills in teaching that promote your self-efficacy and confidence

    • Critically evaluate pedagogy to adopt relevant strategies and teaching methods that promote high-quality behaviour and learning within your individual context

    • Adapt to new environments according to the needs of children

    • Critically reflect on what impacts pupil learning, and exercise independent judgement, using evidence from your own teaching as well as relevant educational research, to inform and improve your own teaching

    • Analyse your own teaching, and research both teaching theory and practice to identify opportunities for future development, and put improvements into practice

    • Develop critical self-awareness from mentoring and respond positively to feedback to develop greater resilience that will help you to enjoy longevity in a teaching career

    • Demonstrate that you understand the relationship between theory and your own practice, and meet the minimum level when assessed against the Teachers’ Standards

    • Synthesise and critically evaluate pedagogical theory and literature in support of an argument and present evidence of effectiveness in relation to your own teaching
