What is Sustainability Assurance?

Internal Assurance

• Ask the internal auditor to review the sustainability report
• However, the credibility/independence of this approach may be questioned especially amongst external stakeholders

Stakeholder Panels

• Assemble a panel of stakeholders who then review the sustainability report
• A good way to ensure that issues important to stakeholders are focused
• However it is doubtful if a full range of stakeholders will get representation

Expert Input/Review

• Hire an expert (scientist) to review the sustainability report
• Experts will have technical knowledge
• However, experts may not be able to access (or may have limited access to) confidential internal data and information

Use of Internationally Recognised Sustainability Reporting Standards

• GRI and AA1000APS

Participation in International Sustainability Reporting Awards

• ACCA international sustainability reports awards
• An independent panel of judges has awarded the report a best sustainability report prize
• However, the panel of judges may not have actually verified the data & information contained within the sustainability report
