Welcome to the final week of this course on aminoglycoside antibiotics. So far in this course, we have learned about the different aminoglycosides, their clinical uses and general pharmacokinetic properties and an introduction to dosing and therapeutic drug monitoring.

In this final week, you learn more about how aminoglycoside PK parameters can differ in special patient groups and why this should be taken into consideration when deciding on the most appropriate dosing. Finally, you will explore the clinical implications of aminoglycoside resistance.

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

  • Describe the effects of renal impairment, age, weight, pregnancy and other important clinical scenarios on aminoglycoside dosing and use
  • Summarise the key ways microorganisms become resistant to aminoglycosides and explain the clinical implications of such resistance

Please do continue to contribute to discussions and share your experiences in the comments section below. We hope you enjoy the final week of the course!
