<v ->I think front end designers and marketers</v> both play a huge role in storytelling, and basically guiding our attention to where they think it should be. And, I think in both of those cases, it’s really important for them to be mindful about the choice of language and images they use to capture our attention, and guide our eyes across the screen, and across the page. So, one of the things that they can do is actually think about whether the images they’re choosing to use, you know, represent a wide range of folks, not just you know, the defaults, not just the dominant groups.

Yeah, and in a similar way, the choices around language you know, what sits at the top of the navigation if you are a company, let’s say. You know, are you going to make that choice of putting your diversity statement in the top navigation, not buried in the bottom you know, around other links. I think all of these choices can be a really purposeful stance to make a point that you are pro-black and pro-other, you know, underrepresented races.

In this video, Abadesi discusses what front end designers and marketers can do to support anti-racism.

She suggests they:

  • Think about whether the images they choose represent a wide range of folks
  • Consider making diversity statements prominent on their websites

This builds on the suggestions discussed previously to:

  • Understand the meaning behind the use of colour and signs
  • Avoid reinforcing positive or negative stereotypes about people based on their race
