Automobility 1900-2020

The motivation for automobility is older than our species. Watch Bern Grush explain more in this video.

The basic, natural conditions and motivations for automobility pre-existed the invention of the automobile. Innovations in machines, energy, and planning during the 20th century expanded and deepened the nature and structure of automobility.

Vehicle automation is very likely to more deeply embed automobility into our cultures and societies, rather than act on its own as a promoter of walkable cities and active transportation.

Without explicit planning interventions, AV is likely to increase, rather than reduce, our average travel by any type of motorized vehicle.
