In this short article, you will learn about the protein database UniProt.

Uniprot was originally formulated as a primary database for protein sequences and functional annotation based on experimental evidence. Nowadays it combines a network of sister databases centralising all levels of annotation produced for protein sequences. It also contains conceptual translations derived from the continuous completion of thousands of genome projects. UniProt is updated regularly, providing a new release every few weeks.

The UniProt homepage provides access to all annotated sequences within SwissProt and TrEMBL. These two databases hold manually curated and automatically annotated protein entries respectively.

Additional information is found next to each of the entry fields and it’s indicated with a superscript (i)

If you would like to know more about the UniProt database you can read the UniProt consortium publication
