Integration between Dynamics 365 and Outlook

This article looks at the integration between Dynamics 365 and Outlook applications. Let's explore further.

Having dealt with general email integration in the previous activities, this activity will look at specifics of the integration between Dynamics 365 and the Outlook applications, starting with an overview of some of the ways Dynamics 365 features are presented in Outlook

The two options that will be presented in this video allow for the Dynamics 365 data to be viewed in the context of Outlook.

In the latter half of the video, we will also be shown a demo of the Dynamics 365 App for Outlook.

Dynamics 365 for Outlook

This is an installed add-in client for the desktop application and does not work in mobile or browser applications.

Installing this application will allow users of the Outlook desktop application to:

  • Track emails, appointments, contacts, and tasks
  • Sort, format, group, and categorise views of Dynamics 365 data using native Outlook functionality
  • Take Dynamics 365 data offline
  • Create Microsoft Word mail-merged documents with Dynamics 365 data

Dynamics 365 App for Outlook

This is the more modern of the two options and functions with mobile- & browser-based versions of Outlook, as well as the desktop application. It is also customisable for the specific needs of your organisation.

This model-driven app allows users to:

  • View contacts and leads in the context of an email message, meeting, or appointment
  • Link email messages, meetings, and appointments to a Common Data Service (CDS) record with a single click
  • Open a CDS record directly from within the context of Outlook
  • Add a phone call, task, or appointment activity or any other CDS record
  • Add email templates, knowledge articles, and sales literature when you create an email message or set up a meeting.
