Crises present both challenges and opportunities to leaders and organisations.

In the video, Damien shares how the COVID-19 pandemic affected his organisation. COVID-19 as an external threat has had an immediate impact on organisations, triggering organisational crises in many instances. However, not all external threats have an immediate impact on organisations; some external factors only have the potential to develop into organisational crises. Leaders have an opportunity to respond to these potential crisis-inducing factors effectively to prevent these external threats from developing into organisational crises.

  • Can you think of examples of businesses in industries other than the art and cultural sector that were negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • Are there any differences in the characteristics and implications of the events presented in the video and case study above?
  • If you were a leader in the organisations involved in the events, what types of response strategies would you adopt to minimise the negative consequences of the crisis?
  • Other than the COVID-19 pandemic, can you think of another event that could have led to a crisis within an organisation?
  • Discuss how organisations responded to that event and what responses were effective in preventing organisational crisis from happening.
