Providing support and drive

Chris discusses the need for all learners (teachers and students) to believe that they can get better and improve in their learning.

Children come to school to learn, and so our job as teachers is to support children in their learning. There are times when learning is hard, and it can seem difficult. This is when the teacher becomes the key agent in diagnosing what the student needs in order to move forward. This might mean helping the student access into the topic by helping them develop specific skills. Or restructure the composition of groups in the class so that collaborative learning can provide support. Or breaking concepts into smaller ideas and then helping students connect these together. Through using Assessment for Learning and a differentiated approach to planning and teaching, teachers can provide both support and drive that students need to learn effectively.

Over the next few steps you are going to build on the ideas in Step 1.9 around the importance of the relationship between the teacher and the students in establishing a classroom culture where all are motivated to learn.

In this video Chris introduces the idea of how the teacher is the key agent for providing appropriate support so that all students learn. Chris suggests a number of approaches that you could implement to further develop a classroom culture where everyone believes they are able to achieve and succeed in their learning.

We will explore some of the seminal work undertaken by Carol Dweck around students’ mindsets and motivation in the next steps.
