Course Aim

Learn about the main course aim for why this course was created.

This course is designed to provide the education required to increase the confidence of clinicians in their knowledge and clinical skills in offering weight management advice and support to their adult patients who have chronic disease.

We expect that upon completion of the EduWeight: E-Learning for clinicians in weight management for chronic disease program you will feel more confident in these areas, and you can assess which elements you feel comfortable to carry with you into your clinical encounters.

By the end of the course, you should be able to…

  • Describe to your patients on the associations and mechanisms linking overweight with chronic diseases, and the benefits of weight loss
  • Explain to your patients on the physiological mechanisms of weight regulation, weight loss and weight re-gain
  • Assess a variety of dietary interventions, work with the patient to identify which intervention would suit their needs and direct them to the information they need to get started
  • Develop an understanding of weight stigma and examine your own beliefs about weight
  • Apply a communication approach for having weight management discussions with patients in a positive, supportive, non-stigmatising manner
  • Apply behaviour change techniques, including motivational interviewing, into your patient interactions to promote behaviour change

How will this course benefit me?

  • This training will equip you to better navigate weight management for patients living with overweight, obesity, and chronic disease, and will provide you with a range of skills that are transferable to other clinical populations.
  • You will learn basic principles of how to address weight management, interventions for weight management, and health behaviour change support. Also you’ll explore weight stigma in the contexts of health care and your own personal beliefs about weight.
  • Online learning is an effective and efficient way to learn, and allows you to complete activities at your own pace.
  • You will receive a certificate of completion (only be available to learners who choose the course upgrade option) as proof of continuing professional development

To help you get the most benefit out of the course:

  • All videos and audio are subtitled, and the transcripts can be downloaded below the video window.
