Why does weight stigma exist?

Learn why weight stigma exists
There are several main reasons why weight stigma exists:

Lack of understanding about the complex causes of obesity: People incorrectly attribute weight gain to a lack of self-discipline and lack of personal responsibility and blame people with obesity for their condition. Thus misbeliefs about the cause of obesity are important factors contributing to negative attitudes and stereotyping of people with obesity such as being lazy and lacking will power.

Cultural norms and promotion through the media: Slim bodies are considered the ideal and something of beauty in many cultures. This message is pervasively reinforced by the media. The media also reinforce the belief that obesity is caused solely by controllable lifestyle behaviours. Provocative headlines and comedy mock people with obesity.
