The alphabet

Watch and/or read about the principles of spelling a word or name in Frisian.
Are you ready for the Frisian alphabet? (USING FRISIAN NAMES) A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, Y, Z. Now pay careful attention to the following letters and their pronunciation.
(USING FRISIAN NAMES) A, E, I, H, U, W, Y. Note that the Y sound has three different spellings.
Vowels can also be combined, and they then make different sounds. Now we will take a look at the most common vowel combinations. A U and O U become “ow,” like in “augustus”.
I and E become “ee-yuh.” “Ien”.
Double I is “ee,” as in “fiif”. E followed by I becomes “ay,” like in “tweintich”. E followed by A is “ey-yuh,” like in “neat”.
O and E is “oo-uh,” or “oo,” as in “goed” or “hoe”. U and O is “oh-uh,” as in “bruorren”. E and U is “oh-ooy,” like in “keuken”. E and O is “euh-uh,” as in “freon”. O and A is “oh-uh,” as in “oant”. Here are some example phrases on spelling.
“Hoe spelst dat?” “How do you spell that?” “Is dat mei in k of mei in c?” “Is that with a K or with a C?” “Kinne jo dat spelle?” “Could you spell that?” “Sil ik it spelle?” “Shall I spell that for you?” “Ik hjit Gosse Tigchelaar.” “My name is Gosse Tigchelaar.” (USING FRISIAN NAMES) G-O-S-S-E T-I-G-C-H-E-L-A-A-R.
