How Ocean Forecasting Supports Services and Decision-Making

See the loop at work in the real world - operational services around the globe, with a strong African focus.

This final video of the week brings everything together. Having built up the end-to-end system and the virtuous loop, Stefania Ciliberti now shows the loop at work – in real operational services that turn ocean data into decisions people rely on every day.

The core idea is simple and powerful: ocean forecasting transforms ocean data into actionable information that supports safer, smarter, and more sustainable decisions. The lecture illustrates this with a tour of services around the world, several of them African:

  • The Copernicus Marine Service – the open, science-based backbone that underpins services worldwide
  • The South African Weather Service (SAWS) – marine forecasts and warnings for South African waters
  • MarCNoWA – Marine and Coastal Areas Management in North and West Africa
  • Regional ocean forecasts for East Africa
  • MOTHY – a drift-modelling system supporting responses to accidental marine pollution and search-and-rescue, tracking oil and slick-like substances, lost cargo containers, and search-and-rescue targets
  • ABALOBI – putting ocean information into the hands of small-scale fishing communities through technology
  • Digital Earth Africa – open satellite Earth-observation data and tools for the whole continent

The lecture closes by looking ahead: the role of science in ocean prediction, where new observations enable new developments, aided by growing computing power and by advances in AI and big-data techniques – all pointing toward more accurate, more tailored, and more interoperable ocean information for the future.

This video completes the big picture of Week 1. From here, the rest of the course zooms in – taking you deeper into the physics, observations, models, and services that make ocean forecasting possible.
