Demonstration: downloading from the Copernicus Marine Data Store

Watch the workflow in action - filter, inspect, subset, and download real ocean data from Copernicus Marine.

In this second part, Nathanaël Dossa gives a live, step-by-step demonstration of the workflow in the Copernicus Marine Data Store (data.marine.copernicus.eu). You’ll see how to:

  • open the Data Store and its four sections – Ocean Products, Ocean State Report, Ocean Climate Trends, and Ocean Visualization
  • use the filters (ocean domain, variable, time period, geographical area, depth, and source) to narrow the catalogue – the product list updates automatically as you change each one
  • open a product page and review its description, data-access options, user manual, quality documents, and citation before committing to anything
  • download a subset: selecting the variables you need (here, sea water temperature), drawing a region of interest on the map, and choosing a time period (here, June-July 2026), with the estimated download size shown before you confirm

The lecture also shows the three access methods – the graphical web interface, the Python Toolbox, and OPeNDAP – and notes that data arrives in NetCDF format, the standard you’ll work with. Follow along on your own computer if you can: by the end, you’ll have downloaded real ocean data yourself.
