The People’s Report Card

In this video, Michael Green is asked how we can measure progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals

So, the Social Progress Index is very much being based on the UN declarations, or a whole range of different declarations, including the Declaration of Human Rights, the MDGs, and obviously now, the Sustainable Development Goals. And we very much see Social Progress Index as a way of supporting the implementation of sustainable development goals. Because one of the challenges is really trying to take the complexity of those 17 goals, and hundreds of indicators, and really boiling that down into a simple message that can be communicated to a wide public. So that’s why I’ve collaborated with global citizens and the global development campaigners to produce something called the People’s Report Card .

It’s a report card for every country on progress towards the SDGs, where we can just distill a country’s performance down into a simple A to F report card. And that way, if we’re going to update these each year, we can give citizens a real sense of how their countries are progressing, how our world is progressing, towards this very ambitious goal– which is also a promise. It’s a promise by the leaders of our world, to deliver this outcome for the citizens. So the citizens demand that of their leaders.

In this video, Michael Green from the Social Progress Imperative explains a tool they developed to help people keep track of their country’s progress towards the SDGs. It’s called the People’s Report Card.

How is your country doing? Do you think measures like this will help hold governments to account?
