When it comes to starting an SEO business, there are a few things you need, we’ll cover exactly what those are in this activity.

1 – SEO Knowledge

You need to know what it is that you’re doing.

But, regardless of what you do, whether that’s doing it yourself, or outsourcing all your SEO work, you will need some SEO knowledge, even if it’s just the basics. That is very, very important.

2 – Amazing Customer Service

This is overlooked by so many SEO businesses but is so important when running any successful company.

Many SEO businesses work really hard to acquire clients, and when they finally get a client, they neglect them and completely forget about them. This results in a low client retention rate, with clients constantly dropping off as they’re not happy with the service they’re getting.

You can easily avoid having a low client retention rate by offering great customer service. Just offering amazing customer service is enough to ensure you stand out. That’s how bad SEO businesses are when it comes to customer service.

As the owner of an SEO business, you should make it a priority to check in with your clients every now and then, just to ask how things are coming along, and to make sure they are happy.

You could even go a step further than that and talk about personal things with your clients. This helps to create an extra bond and an extra layer of protection and will ensure you’re not seen as just another SEO business that they can change at any point.

However, it all comes down to customer service and keeping your clients both informed and happy.

3 – Professional Website

The main service you are offering is SEO, which is essentially the art of getting clients higher up in Google. If you don’t have a website yourself, then it’s going to look a little bit odd. On top of this, your website is one of the first things that potential clients will see.

As the old saying goes: “you only get one chance to make a first impression”, therefore you want to make sure that it’s a good one. You can’t be charging clients thousands of dollars per month when your website looks terrible. You want to look the part too.

4 – Know How to Acquire Clients

Acquiring clients for your SEO business involves actually going out there and convincing clients to pay you money every single month. As you can imagine, this is a massive element of this business model.

Master this and you’re almost guaranteed to succeed.

5 – SEO/Reporting Tools

You’re going to want good SEO tools and the knowledge of how to use them. There are both free and paid solutions, which will be covered in more detail in the next activity.

And whilst it’s not compulsory, it would be beneficial to have some sort of reporting tool. This enables you to quickly and effortlessly give the client an update of the work being carried out, along with the results you’re managing to achieve.

However, if you’re running on a tight budget, then you can literally just put together a simple word document, and send that over to the client for free. This is exactly what I did when I first started out.

6 – Invoice and Payment Solution

You’re going to need some way to invoice your clients and get paid for the work you’re doing. There are a lot of free options available, as well as some premium solutions.

7 – Willingness to Keep Learning

SEO is forever changing. What works today might not work next year. Therefore, you have to be willing to keep learning and adapt to the climate.

This will help you tremendously when you’re starting and growing your SEO business.
