How to say thank you in Chinese and make response

Today we will learn how to express gratitude to different people in Chinese and two ways to respond.

If a Chinese people did you a favour, you can say 谢谢 xièxie. The second 谢 is a neutral tone, which is short and light.

You can also put a pronoun “you 你“ after 谢谢,means thank you

If you want to show more respect, you can say 谢谢您 xièxie nín.

If you want to thank more than one people, you can say 谢谢你们 xièxie nǐmen.

When others say 谢谢 to you, you can say 不谢 bùxiè, 不 means no, not.

Pay attention

The original tone is the fourth tone 不bù, but when 不 meets the character with the forth tone, its tone will change into the second tone. That is . So 不 and 谢 together, it is not read as bùxiè, but búxiè.

And there is another way to say you’re welcome, 不客气 bú kèqi You can find 不 is also changed into second tone here because 客 is the forth tone.
