Tips from Andrew

If you could travel back in time and give your younger self any tips, what would they be?... Tips from Andrew from Deliotte
It is an interesting question when I would go back to my younger self and what tips I would give I think, when I look at some of the projects I’ve been involved in some of the organisations I’ve worked for when life has been difficult is you’ve not had the senior exec sponsorship that’s really required for data projects and analytics projects to work well, so I think I would tell myself… You gonna make sure you have that conversation, interactions with the top table, and that you’re educating the team, right from the CEO down on the benefits of good data. So that would be the one thing I would say.
I think the second thing I’d say it’s all very well, starting on a data project, but if you don’t have a clear view of what, what business outcomes you want to deliver that often you can fail very, very quickly and not in a good, good way. So having that clear linkage to the business outcomes and strategy, I think the third thing is, we often try to over-complicate things, data is a complicated world, but I think sometimes we can over theorise and make it more complex than needs to be so keeping things simple.
So, for example, a simple technology platform, integrated platform that can make life a lot easier for you rather than having 10 different things that do the same thing. Keeping things simple is a mantra that I would love to have kept throughout my career. But yeah, so those are the three things I would tell my younger self to do when running projects, and also engaging with clients.

I also asked Andrew, “If you could travel back in time and give your younger self any tips, what would they be?”.

It was great to hear Andrew discuss the need for senior sponsorship and the benefits of focusing on organisational outcomes. The message to “keep it simple” is great advice.
