Are you considering applying to study Microbiology at University? We’d like to invite you to follow your passion for the hidden world on the BSc in Microbiology at the University of Reading.

This undergraduate degree will give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge of some of the world’s most dominant life forms. You will address questions about how microbes function and how we can use this knowledge to the benefit of human health and the planet.

You will be able to develop laboratory skills in purpose-built microbiology facilities, and can choose a year-long placement within a relevant organisation, allowing you to build relationships with industry members and stand out to employers.

This week you heard from a number of our experts and you explored the characteristics of the five groups of microbes, how they function and where they live.

You also got the chance to explore the first of its kind – our 3D models of an amoeba (a protist) eating a bacterium that is being infected by a bacteriophage and a Gram negative bacterial cell.

Next week you’ll get the chance to find out about some of the major discoveries in microbiology that have benefited our society and how microbiologists study microbes today, including deadly pathogens like Ebola virus. You will also be able to explore another 3D model to learn more about the components of the bacterial cell wall.
