Identify your personal values

In this article, we are going to help you to identify your personal values.
In this step, we’re going to invite you to undertake the same task Sophie did, helping you to identify your personal values and how they relate to a career in the wellness industry.

To perform this exercise, you should either have a notebook or some note-taking software handy.

Use each of the below headings to structure the exercise:

1. SELECT – Identify your top ten values. Hint: go back to step 1-2 for examples of common personal values. Don’t spend too much time agonising over your decision. Go with your gut instinct.

2. PRIORITISE – Prioritise each value from 1 to 10 (1 being the most important). Focus on your top five and briefly define what each means to you.

3. CONTEMPLATE – Read each value slowly, letting the meaning of each word sink in so that you fully understand what each one means to you. Make notes on how you feel.

4. DEFINE – Select your top three or four values and highlight them in your notebook or document. Commit them to memory as they will now act as your decision-making blueprint. Write them on a sticky note and stick them on the fridge and around your mirror!

5. COMMIT – Have a think about what you need to add or remove from your life/career/job and what you need to change to reflect these values. Make some notes on any thoughts that arise.

6. REFLECT

What do you think?

  • How did it feel doing this task? What thoughts arose? What inspirations?
  • Did you discover anything new about yourself in this task? If yes, what thoughts do you have about these revelations?
  • Which of your values in your current career are being fulfilled?
  • What lessons have you learnt from completing the ‘Values’ task?
