Careers specific to the wellness industry

Wellness is becoming a more recognised professional industry. In this article, we discuss careers that are specific to the wellness industry.

So many people think that working in wellness means working as a yoga teacher or PT but we’re here to demonstrate to you that wellness is in so many industries already.

A growing professional industry

Wellness has been around for millennia but, only in recent years has it become a more recognised professional industry. With this professionalism of the industry comes opportunity. Wellness, in itself, is now categorised as its own industry.

Wellness is starting to touch many other industries (if not creating whole new wellness segments within them) and is becoming fully integrated into the world’s economy.

There are, however, some industries where wellness is already established and has created its own category within that industry.

These are detailed below:

  • Retail
  • Beauty
  • Fashion
  • Fitness
  • Food & Drink
  • Technology
  • Corporate Wellness
  • Medical & Therapy
  • Events
  • Travel/Hospitality
  • Spa

There are also industries, listed below, where wellness is already starting to impact but is not yet quite as integrated as the above industries.

  • Agencies and services: Advertising/Marketing/Design/PR/Social Media/Brand/Talent
  • Apps and online platforms
  • Education and training providers
  • Investment firms
  • Publishing: Magazines/newspapers
  • Property (wellness real-estate)
  • Admin and support (as wellness grows, there is an increasing demand for these services)

Job functions inside wellness companies.

So often we hear people say that they just don’t know what kind of jobs exist in the wellness industry and feel completely lost when they think about trying to crack it.

It comes as no surprise, given how quickly this industry is growing and changing…so if that’s you, don’t worry.

Underpinning every business/company are core functions such as:

  • Admin & Customer Services
  • Business Development/Sales
  • Operations
  • Finance & Accounting
  • HR
  • C-Suite (COO, CFO, CTO, CEO)
  • Marketing & Communications
  • IT

Wellness is no different! Too often people assume that to work in wellness, they have to start from scratch and completely retrain as a junior. It’s simply not true (and perhaps this comes as a relief).

An incredible route for many people is to simply repurpose their current skillset for a new industry in wellness (JOB CHANGE – as described in more detail during the earlier steps of this week).

Equally, there will be many people who feel totally disconnected from their current job and do wish to retrain (CAREER CHANGE). The main thing is that you know what you want to do and that you take action to make it happen!

Types of jobs inside each of the job functions

Take a look at the table in the See also section to get some incredible insights and inspiration for the different job functions in wellness, the associated job types and some specific examples of jobs from the vault of the Welltodo Careers jobs board.

Whilst many of you on this course will have the goal of doing the same or similar job except within a wellness company, there will also be many of you inspired to completely repurpose your skillset and transition into a brand new career in the industry.
