Weak vs strong signals

Watch Wendy Palmer introduce weak and strong signals of skill and how capability becomes visible, explainable and transferable.

In this short video, we introduce the idea of weak and strong signals of skill.

You will explore the difference between:

  • completing a task
  • demonstrating capability
  • being able to recognise and explain that capability

A student may successfully complete a task, but this does not always make their learning visible. A strong signal of skill goes further. It makes capability clear, explainable, and transferable.

This distinction becomes important when we consider how students understand and communicate what they can do.
