If you search online for key management skills, you’ll find many lists with different words but similar ideas. Management roles and functions change but also stay the same, and so do management skills, which include basic abilities and specific skills for different situations.

Daft and Marcic (2014) suggest three key areas for managers:

Managing Yourself

This means being aware of yourself, thinking about your actions, managing your time stress, and understanding situations.

Managing Relationships

This involves mentoring, coaching, inspiring, empowering, resolving conflicts, creating a positive culture, and communicating well.

Managing Your Team

This includes planning and sharing your vision, setting goals, allocating resources, managing performance, networking, building relationships, and leading change.
