Hello! Welcome to our symbology course. A course on math puzzles all to do with encrypting numbers and mathematical symbols in math puzzles. I’m standing here at the beautiful Garden of Science, the Clore Garden of Science, here at the Davidson Institute of Science Education, the educational wing of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. This is a beautiful location. It’s our job to teach math and science to the public, and that’s what I hope to do together with you in this Future Learn course, So, join me on a fantastic journey into math puzzles and symbologies. The way we’re going to do this is just by going step by step through the 3 weeks of our course.

The first week we’ll dedicate to cryptarithms. which is encrypting numbers with letters. The second week we’re going to deal with symbologies, ancient Egyptian math puzzles, Roman numerals and other kinds of symbologies, including modern bar codes, how to read them, how to decode them. And the last week, we’re going to deal with the things in between the numbers in mathematical expressions, the operators. And, the course is full of activities, week by week you do every step. There will be videos, there will be exercises, there will be quizzes, so do join in the discussions and join me in the course. Let’s go!

Welcome from Dr Yossi Elran

This course is all about math puzzles, specifically cryptarithms, symbologies and operator puzzles. Each week will have a theme, and we’ll learn about it through videos, articles and discussion. There will also be other optional tasks and exercises you can try to enhance your learning. Each week builds on the last, so we strongly recommend you work through each week in order. Each week should take you 2 to 3 hours to complete if you do all the tasks, and there is a test at the end of most weeks so you can see how much you have learnt.
