Insurance Requirements for Fitness Businesses

Making sure you’re covered to teach boot camps or outdoor training is an essential step of your planning process. If you currently own a fitness business or registered as an Exercise Professional, check with your insurance provider ensure you will be covered under your current policy to host an offsite group class. If a boot camp is the first step in your plan towards starting a fitness business, meet with an insurance agent to see what type of coverage you’ll need.

Most importantly, work within your Skill Set and your Qualifications. If you are in doubt of what outdoor fitness programs you can offer your clients, refer to the Scope of Practise for Fitness Instructors and Trainers.

Fitness instructor insurance should be fairly inexpensive. We encourage you to shop around and find a good deal (this insurance should not cost much more than you would charge for 2x1hr PT sessions).

Providing good orientation and health screening for all clients is an important step for providing best practice, but also great engagement for clients to provide long-term commitment and retention.

Many of the public, private or council-owned land that you wish to provide outdoor training sessions on, will require a ‘Certificate of Currency’ or evidence of your insurance coverage. Your insurance organisation will usually determine the amount of Public Liability and Professional Indemnity that is required of fitness instructors, trainers and businesses to be covered for, to be eligible to obtain and recreational permit of some kind.
