OA Physiotherapy Consultation Aims

The broad aims of the physiotherapy consultations are to:

  • Educate about the patient about OA and its best-practice treatment options, so that the patient has accurate knowledge, is informed about benefits and risks of treatment and has realistic expectations about their OA and treatment goals;
  • Prescribe a structured strengthening exercise program that is monitored, supported and progressed over time;
  • Prescribe a personalised physical activity plan (including daily step goals if the patient has access to an activity tracker) that is monitored, supported and progressed over time;
  • Equip the patient with the knowledge, skills and confidence to continue with the strength program and physical activity plan into the future after your consultations have finished, including being to independently modify and progress the program themselves.

The table below outlines the key elements of each of the five OA consultations. The consultations have been designed and structured to logically build on knowledge and skills gained in previous consultations, in order to achieve the broad aims outlined above.
