Overall, project characteristics are obtaining goals in an uncertain environment, with the purpose to create value, where goals have to be S.M.A.R.T formulated. However, if a goal-seeking project, initially a vision or overall direction is used. Goal-seeking projects are characterized by problem-structuring and goal-oriented projects of focusing on problem-solving.

A milestone is a major work package or achievement, used by the project team in planning and monitoring progress.
