Introduction to Week 3!

Food plays an important part in health and well-being. Food sensing technologies are used to monitor food quality, safety & authenticity.

Globally, the food sector plays a significant role in human well-being through the provision of authentic food fit for human consumption.

Unsafe food, containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances cause more than 200 diseases, ranging from diarrhoea to cancers. The World Health Organisation estimates 600 million people fall ill after eating contaminated food and 420,000 die every year.

New and innovative food sensing technologies and digitalisation provide the food industry with an opportunity to address inadequacies in:

  • Food quality
  • Food Safety
  • Food authenticity

This in turn, helps to build a food system based on the principles of integrity and improve consumer trust in our food industry.

This week we will showcase food sensing technologies within the agri-food sector.
