Leadership with shared purpose

How do you create shared purpose?
Group discussion

Effective leadership in a changing world must go beyond a written organizational mission statement or vision statement. It must even go beyond the leader’s vision and sense of purpose.

Leadership for shared purpose is doesn’t just mean that the leader creates and communicates a vision that everyone shares in. Instead, the leader should support all stakeholders in considering for themselves what the vision should be.

How can you create shared purpose? Mark Bonchek of Shift Thinking says it’s simple, but not easy. The essential question is:

What is the shared purpose that …

a) We and our customers can work on together?

b) Is a natural expression of who we are and what we stand for?

c) Connects how we make money with how we contribute to the world?

Shared purpose is not something you are going to do to others, or for others, but with others.

In the next step, we will show some examples of how social enterprises can translate shared purpose into partnerships. Before that, share in a comment what the shared purpose of your social enterprise is, or the shared purpose of a social enterprise that your find inspiring.
