Topic 3: CO2 emissions
Global warming is often attributed to human activities that produce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other greenhouse gases.

From the ‘Downloads‘ section in Step 2.13, download the zip folder and from the .csv file dataset of per capita CO2 emissions (in tons) in 2011 for European, as well as Central and South American, countries. Upload into RStudio to analyse and answer the following questions:

  • Construct side-by-side box plots for the emission data broken down into two regions: Europe, Central and South America.
  • Compute the mean, median and inter-quartile range for each of the two regions. How do they compare?
  • Looking at the plots, give an approximate numerical value for any potential outliers shown graphically. Which countries correspond to these outliers?
  • What shapes would you predict for the distribution in Europe, and in Central and South America? Why? Confirm by plotting the histograms and adding normal approximation curves.
  • Summarise how the CO2 emissions compare between the two regions.
