Most common greeting and farewell / Saludo y despedida más común

¡Hola! y ¡Adiós!

¡Hola! es el saludo más común y ¡Adiós! es la despedida más común. Se pueden adaptar a muchos contextos diferentes y se pueden usar a cualquier hora del día. Pero atención: se usan en contextos informales, es decir principalmente con personas que conocemos y que son cercanas a nosotros.

Responder a estas expresiones es muy fácil, simplemente repetimos las mismas palabras:

¡Hola! ¡Adiós!

¡Hola! is the most common greeting and ¡Adiós! is the most common good-bye expression. They can both be adapted to many different contexts and can be used at any time of the day. But be careful: they are used in informal contexts, that is, mainly with people we know and who are close to us.
Replying to these expressions is very easy, we simply repeat the same words: ¡Hola! ¡Adiós!
¡Hola! = Hello! / ¡Adiós! = Bye!

Saludos / Greetings

En español hay diferentes formas de saludar que varían dependiendo del contexto, de la hora del día o de la persona a la que se dirige el saludo. Ya sabemos que ¡Hola! es la expresión más frecuente. Estudiemos ahora algunos saludos más:
  • Buenos días.
  • Buenas tardes.
  • Buenas noches
In Spanish there are different ways of greeting and saying hello, which vary depending on the context of the situation, the time of day and who we are talking to. We already know that ¡Hola! is the most frequent expression. Let’s now study some more greetings:
  • Buenos días.
  • Buenas tardes.
  • Buenas noches
Estas son expresiones formales básicas para saludar:
These are basic formal expressions for greeting:
  • Buenos días.
  • Buenas tardes.
  • Buenas noches
NOTA: En español podemos usar tú, usted o vos para hablar directamente con otra persona. Se suele aceptar la idea general de que tú y vos se usan para las situaciones informales y usted para las más formales. Sin embargo, hay muchas variaciones de país a país.

NOTE: In Spanish we can use tú, usted or vos to speak directly with another person (“you”, singular). It is generally accepted that tú and vos are used for informal situations and usted for more formal ones. However, there are many variations from country to country.

Buenos días = Good morning

Buenas tardes = Good afternoon

Buenas noches = Good evening

Complemento al saludo / Complementing the greeting

Las siguientes expresiones pueden hacer parte del saludo, es decir, que se pueden combinar con las anteriores para complementarlas.
The following expressions can be part of the greeting, that is, they can be combined with the previous ones to complement them.

¿Cómo está? ¿Cómo estás?
¿Cómo le va? ¿Cómo te va?
Estas son algunas respuestas típicas a las preguntas anteriores:

Veamos este corto diálogo formal (con usted):

Hombre/Man: ¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?

Mujer/Woman: ¡Hola! ¡Muy bien, gracias! ¿Y tú?

Hombre/Man: ¡Muy bien también, gracias!

¿Cómo está? ¿Cómo estás? (¿Cómo están?-you plural) = How are you?

¿Cómo le va? ¿Cómo te va? (¿Cómo les va?-you plural) = How’s it going?

¿Cómo le ha ido? ¿Cómo te ha ido? (¿Cómo les ha ido?-you plural) = How’s it been?

¿Cómo ha estado? ¿Cómo has estado (¿Cómo han estado?-you plural) = How have you been?

¿Qué tal? = What’s up? / ¿Qué hay de nuevo? = What’s new?

Siempre se puede personalizar la conversación utilizando el nombre de la persona:
