Understand the importance of the human microbiome in our health and well being.
10.1
The human microbiome is the combined genetic material of all the microbes that live on and inside the human body, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. We host an incredible number of these microorganisms, more than all our human cells combined.
30.1
On the whole, we coexist. They play a vital role in our health, immune system, and physical makeup. And the characteristics of our body determine what microorganisms we attract and are able to host. For example, dry or moist parts of our body provide different conditions for different microorganisms. In this first week, you will learn how our microbiome is heavily influenced during our early years, particularly as a result of breastfeeding and the introduction of solid foods. But it’s also dynamic, transforming over time as we age and the conditions in and around our body change.
70.4
You will also learn about the three main functions of the gut microbiota– protective, structural, and metabolic– and how they can be of benefit to both our gut and our wider health. You’ll understand how food and diet are not just important for our own survival. What we eat and drink also determines the microorganisms we are able to host and cultivate, in turn, helping us to maintain our health and immune system.

Did you know that we can be considered as a superhosts?

Yes, as a matter of fact our body is colonised by microorganisms, which are extremely important for our health and wellbeing. In this first video of the course you will be introduced in this fascinating world of the human microbiome.
