Food and diet are not just important for our own survival, but also a healthy gut microbiome. This week, we’ll look at the journey of food and how our gut microbiome is dependent on the food we eat. We will introduce you to the complex and diverse structures of food that need to be broken down for our body to extract nutrients. And you will learn about fermented foods, such as yoghurt and cheese, and how supplementing our diets with probiotics can benefit our gut microbiota. You will also learn the importance and benefits of fibre, as well as other food components, such as resistant starch, polyphenols, and prebiotics.

To understand how our diet impacts our gut microbiome, it’s also important to have an understanding of the journey of food. We’ll explain how food travels through our body, and the different stages at which nutrients from food are absorbed and used by the many trillions of microorganisms that live in our large intestine. By the end of the week, you will have a good understanding of which foods benefit your gut microbiota and why. And you’ll have the opportunity to think about meals and foods that actively benefit your microbiota.
