Over the next three weeks, we will explore the role that languages play in every facet of life and how they can be used, for good or for ill, to shape the world:
- How and why languages influence each other.
- What makes languages ‘high status’ and how this status can change.
- How languages can be used to uphold or disrupt structures and organisations.
- How languages can be used to forge identities.
Please note that active tutor facilitation is limited to the number of teaching weeks from when the course run started. Please do not therefore expect any further tutor engagement from beyond then, although you are very welcome to continue to work through the course materials in a self-directed fashion from that point.
Learning outcomes
As we work through the materials and activities, we will enable you to:
- Explore the importance of language in a variety of social, cultural and linguistic contexts.
- Investigate how languages have historically and continue to shape our world.
- Discuss different ways that languages can be used as social, political and cultural tools.
