  • Yes, these are fascinating questions in themselves ~ and something about our species? Humanity through music ...

  • This is wonderful, and fascinating, what beautiful history ~ thank you.

  • ... this seems to be the case in recent years, I observe, too... However, for me and some of my older friends, we rarely had any allergies during our childhoods in the late 20th C, and in recent years I am becoming more and more allergic to dust, pollens, a number of foods, and most recently to wheat/gluten ~ it seems that allergies are increasing,...

  • @LeahBeckett *applause*

  • ... I understand that it's dependent on the correlation with body mass in each species, too.

  • I'm sorry for your scary experiences... Me, too... my routine blood pressure monitor noticed my irregular heartbeat, and when I told my gp, she sent me for an e.c.g. ~ maybe you could ask for an e.c.g.? Then they diagnosed me with tachycardia, which I just live with so far... Perhaps you could investigate your heart-health beginning with asking for these...

  • Yes, as Karen said, young people can experience all of these situations, too... the CBT tool in less defeatist self-talk...? And, taking actions with things we are unhappy with...? It is difficult, but begin with one step...

  • Yes @TeelagaSamy, I recognise the science of the plasticity of the brain too (and also from my own personal experiences of complex ptsd and then Cognitive Behaviour Therapy changed my entire life) so, yes @ElyAthron I also think your conversational reply about the excellent plasticity of the brain, and our ability to change the neurons and pathways with our...

  • Very good points, Shaun ~ I personally spent my childhood learning the former, and am very much in favour of encouraging improvisation right from the start ...

  • ~ excellent response!

  • Yes, very clearly explained and very helpful, thank you!

  • -- was she interested in improvisation? Having come from a heavy music theory background, and then moved into more free-form improvisation with others, I would only say, encourage improvising as well as, most definitely, her own compositions?

  • This course was fascinating and I learnt so much more about the biology of the brain, thank you.

  • ... the wonders of the human brain investigating itself, learning about itself, and helping humanity.

  • I was just thinking about the tragic symptoms of Huntington's Disease, compared to the modern ready treatment of schizophrenia ~ may we continue to learn and help humankind.

  • So... Is consciousness different to self-awareness? Sentience...?

  • I relate to Chris's symptoms of his social anxiety, and if only he could talk about it more, because so many people do feel these similar symptoms in varying severities ~ ironically, feeling less alone does help a little bit, too.

  • Fascinating.

  • Yes, fascinating to be able to map the brain by its functions ~ great achievement indeed.

  • ... regarding brain-body mass size ratio, I have read in science journals that apparently several dolphin species have a larger brain relative to body mass than any primates including humans.

Thank you, everyone still here : *

  • @TommasoEmiliani Yes, it's true that when plastic was first invented in the early 20th century, along with bakerlite, people thought that it would stop the exploitation of the natural world and there would be no more need for destruction for wood, animals' ivory, and more (costume-jewellery and clothing materials, for other examples) ~ isn't it awful that...

  • @ParthChaudhary No, across the average total.

  • All of these detailed step-by-steps are so very helpful, in addition to your explanations as to *why* and *how*, these suggestions are exactly what I need to help me with right now, thank you Professor Kinderman.

  • ... I wasn't allowed given equal access to the university libraries I needed for my postgrad research because of difficulties with my disabilities ...

  • Well, Machiavelli existed before "pop psychology" or the term "emotional intelligence" ~ it's still simply *emotional manipulation* and we can deal with it in the same way, by adding *intelligence*!

  • Very good example, and a lot more of a better, more complex system of thinking and more rounded intelligence, I would say...?

  • ... Can intelligence perhaps simply be reductively defined with the ability to learn? The ability to pick up skills? Therefore emotions are certainly critical to complex thought processes, too...

  • ... I think emotion is valuable and essential for humanity and the humane elements of decisions, but needs to be tempered with logic and both weighed up together...

  • @RosiGladwell Being in ~ mindfulness ~

  • @ChayPearson ... this happened to me, too, from both ends of the spectrum and experiences mentioned ~ I empathise with you.

  • Yes, in some ways, inner-urban poverty can be even worse.

  • I'm in Melbourne and a lot of my family are out through Marysville, Black Spur ~ thank you, Darren, for all you have done, thank you.

  • Yes, this is a great definition ...

  • 4.0!

  • Yes, if the present moment and this is all, then choosing to do kindness and our integrity becomes *everything* in this moment.

  • Thank you for this section ~ and very useful reminders, thank you.

  • ... plus, it's fun communicating and trying to think of good examples of ways to demonstrate such explanations ~ and then see if anyone tells me whether I'm wrong or right or okay! ; )

  • @MarcAhchoon : ) You're very welcome! For me to write it out is a good way for me to learn it as I re-read and write, and learn as I write, too!

  • There are many drugs that have non-specific targets ranging throughout the body, such as broad spectrum antibiotics; as well as drugs which were first used to target one specificity and then later discovered found to be useful to target something else completely, for example, beta-blockers for anxiety disorders and panic attacks.

  • ... when we talk about the shape of the drug fitting the shape of the target-disease's protein? For example, have you seen the micro-photography of the covid-virus and noticed scientists speaking about its orange-coloured protein-spikes? So (apart from that covid-19 is a virus and not a bacteria, which makes it more difficult), the drug's chemistry signature...

To describe with a reductive summary, there are four physical bodily systems that work together: our musculo-skeletal system; our digestive system which processes food, nutrients and waste; the circulatory system which circulates blood, nutrients and hormones and chemicals; and our nervous system includes the brain and all nerves throughout your body.

  • To describe with a reductive summary, there are four physical bodily systems that work together: our musculo-skeletal system; our digestive system which processes food, nutrients and waste; the circulatory system which circulates blood, nutrients and hormones and chemicals; and our nervous system includes the brain and all nerves throughout your body.

  • ~ very true! Also, every variety adds more nutrients.

  • This is just beautiful ~ in its reflective and intelligent analyses but also the feelings, connected, too, which makes the analyses even more, not less in any way!

  • @GHIZLANEELGUIL ... though, to answer your question, yes, I'm sure that some *are* as harmful, too ...

  • @GHIZLANEELGUIL ... I'm pretty sure that re-usable and washable plastic has to be of more solid chemical compositions than disposables? They all have the numbers detailing the chemical compositions printed on them, beginning from P.E.T. and 1 through 5 inside the little triangles, usually on the plastic item's underneath base? Of course, none of the plastics...

  • Yes, definitely don't underestimate your anxiety, don't be embarrassed to acknowledge it, it is a problem, and lots of us understand, too ...

  • @LilJ ~ so true!

This was an excellent course ~ thank you ~ you have taught me that there is a lot more to entrepreneurship than I previously knew ~ character and varieties of personality, social values as well as possibilities of creativity ~ thank you for an interesting and inspiring course!

  • Yes, those of us suffering anxiety or stress or trauma are in heightened nervous states, so we are moreso actively scanning for danger (and noticing negativity/more attuned?) because our bodies and minds are telling us to be aware and constantly-ready for "fight-or-flight" ... Which can be helpful and life-saving when there IS danger, but is very physically...

  • @JuanitaSchwebius -- when the everyday word is on the-tip-of-your-tongue but it just won't come to you?! It feels embarrassing, too, but it happens!?

  • ... that was a *little* bit funny ~ my results ~ I did get rather badly stuck on the words "scared" and "upset", but I also got badly stuck on the word "carrot"...! : )

  • What a wonderful definition and inspiration from "teach-ins" to *teach-outs* ~ thank you!

  • ... having coeliac and just being diagnosed with Crohn's, I have just been told by my surgeons that I need to eat a low-fibre diet and with more carbohydrates, in order to slow down my digestive system which is processing and continuing to move through too quickly ~ thus an example of how carbohydrates=/=bad, the science of nutrition is indeed more complex...

  • Regarding salt intake, since I recently made a large effort to reduce salt for other health reasons, I was shocked to find that my bp dropped, in a matter of weeks, by around 30 points ~ it's true about salt and vascular health! I also couldn't believe how I was physically craving salt for a few weeks, and now I can taste the smallest amount of added salt.

  • Yes, even more is modifiable and possible and supportable, if only more of society and the system had the compassion and courage to actively help... it is getting better, individuals are beginning to help those who need, and realise that they can...

  • It's a good way to define as a sliding scale/a continuum, as someone who has survived ptsd for over half my life, I understand and can communicate much better with the concept as a sliding scale ...

  • ... We are all "photographers" now, or at least amateur photographers learning a little about angles and lighting and shadows: you'd think this knowledge of light-and-shade might actually be helping younger people realise how variable (even one such) images can be! Plus, I see the same insecurities we all have, and have always had, it's just that they're...

  • ... it's true ~ it's just that it's digital now, but it is indeed, the same insecurities we all have, and have always had! It's only the form of media that is different. And, as before, we humans can make the difference by encouraging others to feel comfortable in their own skins and with their own looks and individuality.

  • ... as kids, we had our first impressive Commodore 64 ... alongside our beautiful Atari 2600 <3

  • Oh! I remember that, with the internet and landline phones, too! :-)))

  • ... literally faster and faster, as the digital chip becomes smaller and smaller, yes?

  • @CarolynPaton ~ and haven't I also read that exposure to such variety of bacteria encourages the immune system and thereby reduces allergies?

  • ... And I still understand that diversity of bacteria is a good thing, in fact, so good that it stimulates the immune system and reduces allergies...?

  • @KristinaSpears I know that it makes a significant difference, depending on the type of plastic ~ very soft plastics are much worse, and very hard plastic containers as you describe are better ~ I have read that foods wrapped in cling wraps are very possible to "leach" into each other? And the type of semi-soft "disposable" plastics that are easily crushable...

  • It's disgusting ~ plastic lasts for centuries, doesn't disintegrate at all, only breaks down into smaller and smaller and eventually microscopic pieces that are even now inside the foods we eat and already inside our own internal organs ~ archaeologically (if humans even survive) this will be known as "the plastic age" ~ but what we CAN do is show our feelings...

  • ... I wish her the very best in her future ~ things can change so much over years ... I hope very much for the better!

  • I didn't know this, either: thus, "fructose" in processed foods should really not even be considered comparable to ingesting the fructose in, say, an apple or an orange or a mandarine from my tree in our yard?!!!

  • I have read it, too: alternately wonderful and tragic.

  • Yes ~ consumer psychology is, in fact, about learning how better to *help* people, to assist and support the community, it's not cynical at all, and people will participate and social aspects will thrive moreso if we're better understood through such.

  • ~ What makes us different? Good way to frame the question ...

  • @ElenaF Yes! It's not even harmless, it's actually dangerous, re the great discussions below amongst our colleagues and fellow students...!

  • @ElenaF ... this is fascinating information, too ...

  • Léa H. made a comment

C'est vrai, though, even to be "anti-fashion" is in reaction and in relation to fashion: humans are social animals, and fashion is part of creative expression and is anthropological...

  • Well, I do know that, I've noticed that, various times through my life, but most recently, since I had emergency surgery, most recently just over a month ago, for a large abscess inside my stomach, even just the physical and emotional and psychological ordeal (and nausea from the pain), my stomach seems to have "shrunk" regarding my appetite, but even...

  • Something I always noticed in this society, the idealisation of extreme six-packs and flat stomachs, especially on women, since women naturally have slightly more-rounded bellies because of our internal organs! Interesting that read that, for both women and men to have visible six-pack rectus abdominis muscles, we would need to be respectively 15% and 10%...

  • Yes, nice analysis ~ various reasons for gaining knowledge, but all of us are interested.

  • So, it turns out that my multiple-interests and "over-multi-faceted" paths (over which certain people have teased me!) are, in the end, very good things (besides, they were 'most always enjoyable) after all...!

  • @ClareC P. S. After you do this, you'll have to login to all your fave sites again (like FutureLearn!) so remember all your passwords before you delete your cookies!

  • @ClareC -- the most important thing is to be sure to routinely delete them. On your phone and on your computers. In your phone's internet browser (maybe you have Chrome?) click on the top right corner, go into Settings, Privacy, Clear Browsing Data and click Clear Data ...

  • Also someone who is willing to take risks, and commit to their ideas and ideals and step out of others' lines ...

  • ... I find this fantastic, very helpful, wonderful ~ thank you.

  • I believe that a combination of these responses is better than only one ~ firstly, in empathising, of course I'd want to comfort him, and tell him that he has a right to feel sad and angry and disappointed, that his feelings are valid. But accidents can happen when you're enjoying using your body during sports. So we need to plan and think positively about his...

  • Also, as I get older, I've realised that the younger someone is, they don't have the experience to know nor say to themselves, "well, this will only last for *this* long," and everyone occasionally needs a positive reminder that we will be in a completely different situation (places and doing things we can't even predict right now, and hopefully/surely even...

  • Excellent course, is helping me thanks to your communicating about so many of the very relevant and timely issues that are difficult to talk about at the moment, just when we need it the most -- thank you so much for all of this.

  • Safety
    Love
    Relaxing

  • @RachaelStewart ... you're reminding me! I used to mix blue and red food dyes to make purple, and impress my younger sisters <3 Should play with that again now! From a fellow Nintendo fan!

  • Quite interesting, reflecting on those types of people who get so angry at others' choices of foods... also, the whole concept of foods being classed as "good" or "bad" at all is indeed erroneous, as I am discovering: having coeliac and just being diagnosed with Crohn's, I have just been told by my surgeons that I need to eat a low-fibre diet and with more...

  • This is fascinating ~ particularly the factual evidence of chemical changes in the brain such as increased levels of serotonin after eating carbohydrates? *tick*

  • Well, aren't the emotional states/the psychological feelings and the brain's chemical states very intricately connected? And how do we even begin to decide which is the *cause* and which is the *effect*?

  • Concludes that first aid help from passers-by/by-standers makes a significant difference to traumas and prevents deaths, and first-aid training is indeed something to be encouraged ~ hypothermia (and shock?) needs more of a focus.

... And continue speaking with them, focus on reassuring them ... also ask them what happened?

  • @OlaTawose Hah! Not really, but I try! Thanks! I just like the metaphors : )

  • Even if we taught younger children some first aid basics, it would *normalise* the subject for them, and then as teenagers and adults they would be a lot more confident with the subject further.

  • Very good addition *tick*

  • ... I'm so very glad you helped him.

  • ... I only got 3/5, I got the situations correct that I've dealt with before, sprains and less severe cuts, but I have no idea about cpr, and I would very much like to ...

  • @WillaHaeseler :( I'm so sorry, for the situation and his loss and your grief.

  • Léa H. made a comment

It's really sad and very tragic that 59% of people there would be afraid of trying to help for lack of confidence in their knowledge ... basic first aid is that very important thing that everyone *should* learn, and we too-often don't get around to, and rue the day we wish we had, forever ~ so happy to be studying this course ~ thank you for offering it here.
