  • I have very few poetry books, but I do read poetry on the internet from 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. There so many to choose from and to read. I like Phillis Wheatley, Charlotte Smith, William Wordworth, Longfellow, Edgar Alan Poe, Christina Rosselti, and Maya Angelou, along with many ore.

  • The poetry was interesting not sure if I understood the first poem. I believe the second was love an sorrow. Nothing is more extraordinary then the love for a grandchild and the devastation of losing a parent.

  • I've taken several course through Future Learn. I love it. I have several certificates and many diverse interest. I completed 17 courses. One of the course's was offer by the Wicking Institute.

  • Is the How to Make a Poem course still available

  • Hello everyone. I am a retired recreational therapist. I taking this course to help me become more proficient at writing poetry.

  • Great information.

  • I was impressed with the non-verbal interactions.

  • Great course, I am happy I finished it. 3 years late.

  • 1. Why is this item of clothing important to you?
A scarf that my mother crocheted
    2. What does the item say about you?
It says I like homemade items
    3. What memories does it bring up for you?
It brings up memories of my mother,

  • I finally finished this course. I upgraded and this unfinished course showed up. Great course. I learned a lot and I wish America would do more learning from other countries.

  • Cultural diversity is so important in dealing with people even if the people do not have dementia. Knowing some of the background information about the people would go a long way in providing good support for the people that have dementia.

  • Interesting and powerful engagement with people in a neutral situation. Many of the people responded positive to the new stimuli.

  • It is a great program, I know from some of my other studies how powerful music and dance is for some people. You can see the people moving and the joy on their faces.

  • I liked the gardening scene everyone knew what was happening and the people with dementia felt included in the program.

  • Wow, very inspirational. How the books can open the world back up to people who are experiencing dementia.

  • We found out that one lady liked to garden. Did the staff create a raised bed for her to have a small growing area. This would bring the lady a lot of joy.

  • I found the Creative Conversations as a great way to get to know the people with Dementia. It is very much like writing for wellness. I love poetry and many of the poetry hit home.

  • Hello all,
My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD many years ago and her children (my grandsons) have been diagnosed with ADHD.

  • @GeorgeWatts Interesting. I've enjoyed this course but I want to finish it. Do I need the review of my submission?

  • Great course.

  • There were some difference and some that were closely related for Chloe and Steve when comparing the two people. In general both have social anxiety and but Steve's appeared to be much worse. This shows that it is important to do assessment on the people so that you can hone into their particular needs.

  • It is difficult to care for inmates with dementia in prison, you have supervisors and staff that do not support you in working with these inmates. When I was on the unit it was impossible to get products that were needed. The people in charge would not even give me a desk or office space. I had to roll in my things everyday. However, even with all the nos,...

  • I wonder if a Arts and Dementia program is here in the states? It is such a great idea.

  • Great research, I have learned a lot from this course. I just upgraded and was able to get back in the course three years later. However, it better late then never.

  • Yes, I believe art, including smells, music, and other recreational activities will help give the person with dementia joy.

  • Yes, the way dementia is referred to is very negative by the press and by people. Mr. Walsh, like to see the press look at what people with dementia can do.

  • The media has to be willing to make changes and to be objective which is less and less now a days. Most media outlets are looking for big stories or sensationalism.

  • People first was taught at the University I attended to get my Bachelor Degree. The public needs to open their eyes to this disease because many people young and older can develop this condition.

  • People first is great it was created to ensure you are addressing the person not the ailment.

  • It is difficult to care for a member of the family without support from others it is a full time 24/7 job. A wider network would be helpful, but also it would be great if government would pay for families taking care of loved ones.

  • @BeatriceRyan My daughter didn't like to be touched or held, but would allow me to hold her for a few minutes if she saw me holding my son.

  • Carolyn Neufeld made a comment

I still need to finish the written part of this course. I am hoping to finish it by the end of next week.
This was great course and it really helped me to understand what was going on with me, my mother, and my daughters. I believe my two brother were on the autism spectrum.
I think one of the hardest things I had to learn is good communication skills,...

  • Interesting, my daughter that is 44, when she was in kindergarten she sat with a group of 10 child and was placed far away from the teacher. She would get up, cause problems, and get bored. She was not able to follow more than one instruction at a time. She was labeled difficult. She would come home from that and throw a temper tantrum for 2 to 3 hours. I...

  • @BeatriceRyan My daughter has been fighting the school district for 4 years. The school systems just want to give lip service but not real help because it cost money it must affect their bonuses or something.

  • Continuous research is important and learning how the brain works are steps in the right direction. I know it is so difficult in some ways to cope with the differences that happens in my child school and in social interactions. When your child comes home from school crying because they are being picked on, or throwing 3 and 4 hour temper tantrums and they...

  • As a parent who wants to help their child a diagnosis helps with schooling. However, here in the states the school system makes it difficult to get the help that your child needs even with a diagnosis. You have to fight to get help or your child, if you don't know what to ask for, you don't get any school system help, even though there are problems that they...

  • I loved it great training.

  • No, I would not change anything in the course. The information provided ROM, Lymphoedema,

  • I will some that fits within my purview

  • I am somewhat confident but would offer exercises under my purview

  • I love the resources that you provide on this course.

  • Carolyn Neufeld made a comment

I know from personal experience, how important emotional support was for me. I had all kinds of support while I was going through the treatment, but afterwards, there little to no support. I had to rely on my own resources and the American Cancer Society helped a lot.

  • I am a 17 year breast cancer survivor, a complementary therapist and Nationally Certified as a recreational therapist, certified as a senior and women's fitness specialist. I believe I have lots to offer breast cancer patients, but not as a physiotherapist. I can give them suggestions, guidelines, along with complementary treatments, such as meditation,...

  • I going to look up in the National Institute of Health if we have the equivalent information. I know I did not receive any of the this type of written material when I was going through breast cancer. 17 years out and I am going to do the exercises because my attitude it is never too late.

  • Great marketing tool to start a business and to take care of patients.

  • One of difference that I dealt with when my daughter was younger was the social awkwardness. I think that is something that seems to be a common theme. However, there is different levels of social difficulties. Some are barely noticeable to some that really invade other people's space. I think the labels help as long as they are used to help the person and...

  • Flexibility is key to having a great physio and patient outcome. I think the only thing I would add is a final assessment and documentation. I would follow up with the patient via Zoom or something like that and do a few exercises with the patient and find out how they are doing.

  • This course has really helped me to see that I am not exercising enough and should really start a better program for myself. I this would also show my clients how important it is for their overall health.

  • Great exercises

  • Great exercises and I look forward to implement this program with my clients.

  • I am going to try and do these exercises. I will start off with just doing the easy ones first for awhile. I will of course check with my doctor.

  • I see I need to invest in resistance bands.

  • Strength exercises are important to help patient be able to use the arm appropriately.

  • Make sure to interview client to see how they are doing.

  • I am looking forward to more information.

  • Great information.

  • Again, I was never told about scar massage and I think my scar is stuck to my chest wall. Do you know if I start the massage now that it will help me. I had my breast implant removed after 11 years on Oct. 2021, and it was a good thing. It had the rough outer shell that can cause a different kind of breast cancer. Is it too late to start the massage? ...

  • I was never told about cording by any of my doctors that I have interacted with over breast cancer surgeries, here in California. I have some cording happening in the palm of my left hand and I have started the manual stretching and I am amazed how much it helps. I love this course, I am learning so much about breast cancer issues that I never knew even...

  • I like the manual therapy because I like having some kind of part in my healing while I was going through breast cancer. I used Western Medicine, chemotherapy and a mastectomy, along with that I did massage therapy, art therapy, music therapy, writing for wellness, visualization, meditation, modified exercises, and diet. It gave a sense of taking part in my...

  • I am so happy to have this guide, I will use for myself and my clients.

  • I have dealt with nerve pain for years, after chemo. It is like rubber bands being snapped at my arms and my feet. However, it doesn't always hit my arms and feet. It is random pains that I get. Thank you for giving me the information.

  • I agree the patient should be referred and at the very least consult with breast care nurse.

  • My daughter is 44 years old now. She is still very concrete, if I am supposed be over house at 12 noon, I better be there or she gets upset.

  • @HazelThomas No, I was blamed by the ex-husband for her behaviour. We ended up divorced.

  • A great start to documenting. If it isn't documented it didn't happen.

  • I am going to use the Smart Plan with my clients and with myself.

  • I need to be more consistent and not take on so many courses.

  • I am learning lots of great information. Thank you.

  • I like the exercises.

  • Great exercises. I need to do these exercises daily. I am 17 years cancer free, but still have issues with my shoulder. I was never offered physical therapy and I did not know enough to ask for it. This is one of the reasons, I want to do a wellness course for the person diagnosed with breast cancer. I want to offer suggestions, complementary treatments...

  • Can a child have a mild form of dyspraxia? My daughter starting at year and half, her gait and walking seemed strange, she used her arms in front of her for balance. I put my daughter in tap dance, her gait and walking improved, along with putting her in Special Olympics in running. These activities improved her balance, gait, walking, and running. The...

  • @ClaireKane It is very frustrating fighting for your child's rights with schools that do everything they can to prevent spending the money for the help. Money is actually sit aside to help children, (here in the states), but the school districts don't like to spend that money on what it is intended to help children that are having difficulties.
    Public...

  • One of my daughters had the following issues: Poor concentration, Impulsivity, Over activity, Noisiness, Low self-esteem, Clumsiness, Social Clumsiness, Inflexibility, Learning Difficulties, and Defiant behaviour. The other daughter had Poor concentration, Low self-esteem, Difficulty in completing tasks, Social Clumsiness, Inflexibility, Learning...

  • There are very forms of intelligence. I have to read everything in order to try and put something together. My daughter could just look at the item and put it together. Many times the so called low IQ is the result of poor teaching skills. Everyone does not think or learn the same.

  • High anxiety makes me forget my zip code, phone number, and I can't even think. It is frustrating, to say the least.

  • Very informative, many times I don't even recognize that I am anxious. I guess because I have lived with it for so long, that I thought it was normal.

  • ADHD and OCD was my daughter in school. She was desperate for friends, she would invade other children space, it was heart breaking, everyday a 2 to 3 hour temper tantrum, crying for at least a half hour before going to sleep, needed a silky to rub.

  • Interesting theories. I did not know when I had my first baby, how to read the signs of a baby, all babies communicate. I am sitting in a child development class and I learn that a mother or parent can be a mismatch to their baby. In addition, babies can let you know how they are feeling besides, hunger, and being wet. Reading further I realized what I did...

  • The false MMR links to autism scares the heck out of me. I am so tired of the disinformation that is being spread. I grew up in the 50's and 60's, vaccines had not been developed. I had the measles, mumps, and chicken pox. It's miserable. Kids, could die from measles if they had a really bad case. If people don't get vaccinated and get chicken pox they...

  • Interesting, my daughter was always on the spectrum, but was never recognized in the 80's. The more I learn about Autism the more I recognize that not only was she on the spectrum, but I believe I am, too.

  • @BrookeHotchkiss I understand what you are saying, but some people just don't notice or see other people. It's like they have their heads in the sand. My intent was not to insult anyone it just that professionals should know better and that was my point. The professionals I was with, gave presentations on being inclusive, to me it looked like they gave it...

  • I've worked for a very large communication company and the State of California and those two entities have a difficult time accommodating people with disabilities, such as the blind, the deaf, and forget people with unseen disabilities, such has respiratory problems. It is interesting, I was taking American Sign Language and I started to notice that people...

  • I noticed with age the daughter with hearing sensitivities improved, the daughter with flashing light sensitivity still struggles with it. Flashing lights can be a fluorescent light turning on, a regular light bulb getting ready to go out, and strobe lighting.

  • When my daughter was young loud music and noises bothered her. My other daughter can't handle flashing lights.

  • My oldest daughter stop mid step and froze from too much stimulation at the mall. She had to be carried out. I did not realize 40 years ago that she had problems, I just thought she was a difficult child. She wanted everything neat and uncluttered in her bedroom. Again, I didn't understand. At 5, I caught her coloring on the wall and I had her wash it...

  • It was difficult with my daughter she wanted friends, but did not do well with other girls. She would invade their space, say stuff that was mean but did not realize it. I enrolled her in special Olympics and she met a young man with Down Syndrome and she stayed friends with him for 20 years. I also enrolled her in tap dance so she would have something in...

  • How old is your son. Some of my older clients read goose bumps it is at approximately 4th or 5th grade level skills. I introduce these books to capture their interest.
I am with you son, I love Halloween but only PG rated scary stuff.

  • I just thought I am a creature of habit...I eat the same thing for lunch everyday for weeks at a time, then I go to different type of food and only eat it for lunch for several weeks. I never thought of it as being a repetitive behaviour. Is that considered a repetitive behaviour?

  • I've done a presentation on how to draw Zentangles to help people get into the flow, art does that for me. I think hyper focus behaviors are great, if done in a positive way. Like one of the speakers stated, "It can be a negative, too, if they do the focused behavior to the exclusion of everything else.

  • Assumptions are hard to overcome in many ways because of stereotyping, which can be reinforced by the person making the assumption. It's frustrating when you try to get help for a child and here in the states they make it almost impossible to get help for them in school. As a parent you have fight for the extra help.

  • Great information.

  • I'll take a longer look, once I clear my current educational schedule.

  • It is important to refer to the person not the perceived illness or disability. People need to be educated on how to refer to people first.
I am always surprised when at a conference the people who should know better overlooked the woman in the wheel chair, cut in front of her, with no apologies.

  • Communication is difficult no matter who you are. Children tend to be more honest and direct before puberty when hormones hit their brains.

  • Interesting, some people talk very loud and they are constantly being told to stop yelling. However, that person was not yelling they just talk loud. So the person that talks loud doesn't really hear how loud they talk and the other person does not believe the person when they say they are not yelling. Neither, one is understanding the other one.

  • Communication is more than being socially correct, it is understanding that there are people with social communication problems. I am always afraid that I am going to say things wrong. They may come out mean when my intentions are just the opposite.

  • 1. Why might there be a breakdown in communication? The person may be saying something, but the body language does not agree, or hearing loss not being able to hear in noisy environments. When hearing is tested it normal but not tested under noisy situations.
    2. Yes, but as a recreational therapist it is important to understand and include diversity.
    3. A...

  • To me it appeared that the larger triangle and the little triangle were happy jumping up and down. However, at one point the big triangle wanted to go out the little triangle appeared afraid to leave. Big triangle forced the little triangle and once the little triangle got used to being out started to play again with the big triangle.

  • Communication is difficult because most people don't really listen they are too busy thinking about what they want to say. One thing that could help with communication is to really listen and then give time for a person to reply. The problem is most people do not give people to answer, hurry up and answer me already, therefore they make the assumption that...

  • Interesting in the Theory of Mind and the article both show the different facets of the children. In studying the brain, some children just may be slower at learning. One thing is for sure patience is important to give children the time they need to respond to your questions and not use leading questions.
