Sabine Straver replied to Tanya Bolotova
@TanyaBolotova You might enjoy the calculator (additional resources on this page). This shows that a small adjustment like LED bulbs can have a great impact over a couple of years.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Patricia Sims
@PatriciaSims yes it is an interesting conundrum; supply and demand. In future week's we'll talk about the efficiencies of some solar cells, hoping they will keep on improving to help with this issue.
-
Lovely to see that learning about the Terawatt challenge is new for most of you.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Tanya Bolotova
Hi @TanyaBolotova, valuable list and something many organisations are working with. Do you see overlap between the United Nations goals and Smalley's work?
-
Sabine Straver replied to Mic Laird
Welcome back @MicLaird
-
Sabine Straver replied to Fiona Graham
@FionaGraham that is a nice reason to join the course. The content in this course will make for good conversations.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Jally Hawthorn
Thanks for your feedback @JallyHawthorn we are glad you enjoyed it and have been able to share your knowledge with others.
-
Sabine Straver made a comment
It's fantastic to see you take the poll and explain your reasoning. There is no right or wrong it is interesting to see the different views.
-
Dan Nocera's presentations are indeed very inspiring @MicLaird . Such a different way of thinking.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Robert Pearson
@RobertPearson thanks for the video it ties a few of the topics in this course together and explains things in a very accessible manner.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Maureen Bowler
Thanks @MaureenBowler we might be a way off but we can imagine it which means we are on the path to mimic parts of nature. Exiting times ahead.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Mic Laird
@MicLaird, that is a lovely way of phrasing it. We are moving beyond some technology and into some mindboggling options for the future.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Iruoghene Odenu
Lovely to hear you are enjoying the course @IruogheneOdenu there is a lot of variety in terms of the topics. Next week will be very interesting indeed.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Linda Gilbert
Interesting further research @LindaGilbert thanks for looking this up.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Maureen Bowler
Nice article @MaureenBowler

Great to see your thoughtful responses on the question. There are many benefits and flip sides to using batteries and being of aware of both of them allows us to have a holistic view on them. Whilst still aiming to improve how, where, when and why we use (different types of) batteries.
-
Sabine Straver replied to John Mullin
Interesting isn't it? That research continues and is needed for items we are all so familiar with.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Guus Löhlefink
@GuusLöhlefink Thanks for adding to the Padlet - great system to use one, charge one.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Margaret Merry
@MargaretMerry Even if you don't have an image, it is a good story. How big were the batteries size wise?
-
Sabine Straver replied to Ron Hughes
@RonHughes, well done on looking up the battery materials. Later this week you'll see some interesting video discussions with Dr. Maria Foresyght about the materials in batteries.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Linda Gilbert
It is amazing how many batteries we use on a daily basis when we stop to think about it.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Mélodie S
@MélodieS What a great point you raise - snow on solar panels.
What works in one part of the world might not work somewhere else or needs to be adjusted to different circumstances. Indoor solar cells do sound very interesting, fingers crossed for big leaps forward in future developments.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Will Myat
@RonHughes @WillMyat Great discussion. It is about shifting our perception from either only good or only bad, to seeing what are aspects that are positive and how can we deal with / create solutions for the negative aspects.
-
Sabine Straver made a comment
Not coming from a science background, learning about polymers and using the word in conversation remains fascinating to me.
-
Sabine Straver replied to David Bottomley
Lovely to hear. We hope you enjoy the course and the social interaction with your fellow learners.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Linda Gilbert
Some great points and critical thinking. We need to keep our eyes open for both solutions and potential problems with the solutions we come up with.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Iruoghene Odenu
Yes and even educating yourself, having these conversations can all add to positive change in the future.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Reinhold Lutz
Thanks for sending through the article. Innovation and projects like this won't always succeed straight away. It is amazing though how they embarked on this vision. It could have a ripple effect to other areas in the world and continues a conversation. Can a city be 100% run on renewable energy at this stage?
-
Sabine Straver replied to Guus Löhlefink
Sounds like a very interesting project.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Guus Löhlefink
@GuusLöhlefink - it is great to see you are going above and beyond the course and finding interesting articles surrounding this topic.
-
Sabine Straver replied to David Bottomley
There are many interesting conversations like the one you raised happening in regards to, how this space will look in the future. Your imagination might not be that far fetched at all in a couple of years from now.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Lee Scott
Throughout the course we embrace this sentiment. There might not be the one solution but more a mixture of options and opportunities.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Maureen Bowler
Lot's of "recent innovations" have been years in the making. Sounds like a man ahead of his time indeed.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Danira Travica
Sounds like you have a very clear plan on what to study and why.
Great to see. -
Sabine Straver replied to Sondra C
Are there innovative programs being implemented in your company/industry?
-
Sabine Straver replied to Gary Newson
@GaryNewson Great point, this is one of the reasons to either be involved or know a little about this field. Twenty years from now we will be amazed by what we can do as technology improves. At the same time, it is important to know where we are and how far we have already come.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Margaret Merry
Some great points Margaret. Yes, there are more conversations about packages for either devices and possibly even energy.
Your other points are very valid and something we will discuss later in the course. -
Sabine Straver replied to Margaret Merry
We are very fortunate with this calibre of educators
-
Sabine Straver replied to Ashmead A
In week 2 we will talk about solar cells and in week 3 we discuss batteries. Sounds very exciting the business you mentioned.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Gary Newson
I think, week 4 will be of great interest to you.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Katie O
We would love to hear how this material links to your other studies.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Jena K
Hi Jena, Yes the experts come from the fields you mention above as well. The course covers a variety of topics, we hope it will inspire you.
-
Sabine Straver replied to Caron Swan
Yes, the comma and full-stop are great to reset the day.
