  • Is there some way I can submit the plan as a word document?

  • If you are interested in mindfulness, i would like to recommend 2 apps. 1. Headspace 2. Waking Up. Sam Harris also wrote a book called Waking Up which I highly recommend.

I have been living in Seoul for 5 years now and one of the things that has most enriched my life here has been reading Korean literature in translation. Korean literature is, I believe, underappreciated on the international literary scene. However, if you are not reading Korean fiction then you are missing out. Reading Korean fiction gives you an incredible...

  • Hello everyone, I am a teacher in Seoul. I have never taken an interest in genealogy before. However, my mother said she was interested. So I suggested we could both do this course. My mum is currently in CORONA lock down in Scotland. I thought doing the course at the same time would give us a hobby to share while we are going through the corona experience. I...

  • Hello. I'm a teacher in Seoul. I just want to learn a little bit more about mindfulness. I started using the Headspace app last year and read the creator's book about meditation. I started the Waking Up app this year and also read the book of the same name. I'm just looking to learn more and I am excited to participate in the course.

  • I teach ESL students at a university in South Korea. I have been teaching here for 10 years. I use technology in the classroom in a variety of ways. However, these days I am beginning to feel like I have fallen a little behind the times. As such, I am taking this course to update my technology knowledge and hopefully also improve my use. I think that my...

Hello. My name is Barry Welsh. I teach EFL at a university in Seoul. I have a masters degree in TESOL. I like studying MOOCs as a way of learning new skills and keeping old skills sharp. I am taking this course as a refresher.

  • I highly recommend Matthew Walker's excellent book "Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams". Reading this book changed my own sleeping habits. I have since used this book to give advice to students every semester since I first read it.

  • I enjoyed learning about neuromyths. I am looking forward to deepening my understanding of the ideas of engage, build and consolidate.

This is not particularly useful for my teaching context. I teach a different subject to a different age group in a different setting and location.

  • @KonstantinaIoannou I very recently listened to a podcast in which two very successful and influential podcasters discussed 'learning styles' as if it were something just generally accepted to be true. It is still an idea which exists and is generally accepted in popular culture.

  • The VAK and different learning styles myth was extremely popular in certain areas of ESL & EFL. As a novice teacher, I just absorbed what I was being taught and only later discovered that it was not verified. I think part of the reason that these neuromyths spread is that they are so appealing - the learning styles myth is such a compelling concept that people...

  • Hello everyone. I am an English as a Second Language and TESOL Trainer at a university in Seoul, South Korea. I think learning, for me, is acquiring new methods, strategies and practices for interacting with the world around me.

  • We could also use discourse analysis and corpus linguistics to investigate how British newspapers have changed the way they talk about the environment. In the 80s and 90s the so-called 'tree huggers' were laughed at and widely dismissed. Also, in the 90s the term 'global warming' came to prominence. This term seemed to be supplanted by the less worrying term...

  • I teach English as a second language and as such find myself using all 5 types of gestures frequently.

  • My father was diagnosed with dementia-like symptoms two years ago and has declined quite rapidly. Unfortunately, I live in another country. As such it is difficult to return home. I am taking this course to better understand what my father is experiencing. I hope the course will give me information that will help my father and my family in caring for...

  • Thank you. I loved the course. This is the best MOOC I have completed. Thank you.

  • I would like to make a corpus of essays written by Korean university students. I would use this corpus to improve teaching methods for essay writing classes at Korean universities.

  • 1. Do you have experience with using corpora in language learning or teaching?
I am a TESOL instructor. I teach a Materials Development and Assessment class. In that class, I introduce students to corpora.

    2. Do you think corpora can be useful for language learning and teaching?
Yes, I do. It can be useful for choosing what to teach and for giving examples.

  • Lexical bundles can be extremely important and useful for second language learners. These ‘chunks’ speed memory, and are useful for improving fluency & accuracy. Chunks can be highlighted in readings to help teach students to recognize them. Chunks can also be directly taught with lists and practice exercises.

  • I searched for *ly_{ADV} in the BNC Sampler. From looking through the results it seems there are many examples of both kinds Hanks mentions in his article.

  • There have been a number of studies which have shown that people will often rate the intelligence of people who use a non-standard dialect lower than those who use the so-called standard dialect. This can happen even if the exact same material is delivered in both the standard and non-standard dialect. In the British context, this is historically connected to...

  • I did not experience any technical issues. In fact, it was very user friendly.

  • I searched for several different colours including some common and some less common. My findings are similar to many of the commenters below. Men seem to use basic colour words (red, yellow, etc) with greater frequency than women. Women tend to use less common colour words (Beige, amber) with greater frequency than men.

  • I would be interested in studying how English teachers are and have been perceived in Korea. I could possibly use English language newspapers to build a corpus to investigate. Although it would be better to build a Korean language corpus.

I built a mini-corpus from Guardian newspaper article including the phrase "teaching English". I chose this phrase...

  • This was a very interesting exercise and I did indeed learn a lot. In particular, it was useful and informative to see the detailed feedback on the essays.

  • This was the article I selected. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/04/dina-nayeri-ungrateful-refugee.
I greatly enjoyed this week's two articles as well as the lectures. I found the analysis contained in the two articles to be genuinely enlightening and troubling. They also very clearly highlight the potential benefits that CL can provide.

  • The activities, readings and lectures from this week reinforced the idea that CL is highly useful and informative

  • I did not have a specific research goal in mind when I started the course. I was simply looking for an introduction to corpus linguistics in general. However, I would like whatever work I do to be of benefit to my students. My students are Korean and are learning English as a second language. As such, I would like any research I do to be of direct benefit to...
