  • Judy sat on an old threadbare sofa. It was comfortable, that is why she liked coming to this shabby, aging café. Comfortable and full of character, as usual the music from a bygone era was playing softly in the background. She listened to Nina Simone singing Feeling Good. Glancing at the table in front of her with its chipped and faded varnish, and the worn...

  • John was full of ideas, his mind seemed to be in overdrive… Ideas were spilling out, new ideas were appearing and seemed to be pushing the early ideas out of his mind. He tried to focus on the ideas he’d had standing on the crowded bus, clamped in place by people on all sides, he could not even move his arm from his side, retrieving his note pad from his...

  • James is a teacher. Unlike most teachers he always wears a suit. One would think that this would make James look smart, but it didn’t. James always seemed to look scruffy. His suit always seemed a little crumpled, not entirely crumpled, but not neatly pressed with sharp lines from pressing as one would usually imagine when thinking of a man wearing a suit....

  • It was a sweltering hot day, Frank looked out of the window at the sun beating down. He sighed, he put on a thick coat over the sweater he was wearing, He picked up his bag, and left the apartment. Frank was not looking forward to spending the day outside, he did not like this weather at all.
Frank look out the window and sighed. He was about to begin his...

  • When I was about 17 and had been working in a company for a short time. I got into an elevator with a man. I did not know him or who he was. I asked him... "Hello, who are you and what do you do here....."
He replied "I'm John ....... I run the joint!"
He was the CEO... he certainly remembered me after that.

  • My biggest success changed the way an industry does business. I achieved this through listening to clients, major corporate clients and potential clients and building a product that met their needs.
Basically, I started with a blank sheet of paper, and had the clients fill in the gaps. The key was taking the time to actively listen, and to understand the...

  • I think the standout feature was that he just talked to the audience.. He did not talk at them, and his use of 'we', in a way that included the audience was also noticeable.

  • The problem with my current position is that it requires a very specific skill set and is not conducive to bringing most of my skills into my work place. The best I can do is ensure my other skills remain up to date from sources outside of the workplace and learn how my current skills can be adapted a across a broad range of environments.
    I have little of no...

  • I looked at the economist report. It seems to me that like most such reports, and courses for that matter, it focuses on developing skills for young people.
It is generally true that the world has an aging population, and that governments around the world are continually pushing the retirement age up as a result.
As most people who have found themselves...

  • If I am honest, I have to admit that until recently I never understood what an entrepreneur was. In my mind it was only the high stakes entrepreneurs, like the Rischard Branson's of the world who were entrepreneurs.
I now understand that there are millions of entrepreneurs in the world, and I understand the reason for my disconnect.
    I am blessed with...

  • Digital Skills certainly, and a new way of communicating perhaps, all communication, well most even job interviews are done on line now, sometimes audio only. Far from convinced this is effective. Adapting to interview styles of the digital, tick box era is also important, often interviewers ask canned or scripted questions which leads to them looking for...

  • Not entirely. John did acknowledge the high level of wastage which seemed to be Anne's primary concern. he explained the reason for the wastage and offered a solution to prevent it occurring in future. Anne seemed more interested in admonishing John and did not grasp the opportunity to address the issue in a meaningful way. This attitude is typical of what...

Setting your objectives - Create an example goal, or objective, that you would like to achieve by using social media to promote your brand.
I am looking at establishing a new training company. My goal is how to best understand how to establish my company as accreditable source of training within the international community of young adults.

  • Referendum votes are as noted often based on emotion.. but they are not real emotions associated with the passions of true believers... They are are surface emotional reactions to fragments of information which is how we receive our news and catchy slogans which are little more than attention grabbing headlines.
Often the immature reactions to fragments of...

  • Personal interest which is often fueled by the emotional responses that are in themselves fueled by personal interest is more important to most that national interest.
Politicians succeed by aligning their own personal interest to the personal interest of voters... not be sharing the a common personal interest, but by creating a perception that they do.
    The...

  • I think the basic problem is that life is more difficult for many people in Western democracies than it was in the past. Both economically and in respect of the perceived loss of freedoms brought about by the ‘nanny state’ mentality of many government departments. People are both frustrated and confused... they often have to work harder than they did in the...

  • I think globalization or on a lesser scale multi country unions are managed by bureaucrats or sometimes business interests. Neither of which can produce a satisfactory result. I think too that much of the globalization efforts are based on a ‘one size fits all’ approach which is something we see in education as well. The problem is that ‘one size does NOT fit...

  • Mostly I think much of the perceived factors contributing and perhaps controlling and driving globalization are smoke and mirrors giving the illusion of the control.
The reality is that technology is mostly used to gather information designed to fuel consumerism and create wealth. Not only is every aspect of our technological use recorded and monitored but so...

  • I think that Globalization could perhaps be described as standardization.. Motivated more by financial concerns rather than any of the other factors.. Those behind the mega companies which drive standardization are concerned it seems only with the acquisition of more wealth.. and the four factors mentioned are by products if this.. for example the only...

What if learning was more important than teaching?
What if teaching was more important than administration?
What if there was one international standard of education?

  • Both are serious considerations @PatrickS

  • I suspect all 3 options are a feasible, and I would pursue all 3.

  • I think perhaps to release the illusion of control

  • Take the time to watch the TED Talk it is very interesting and informative.

  • I think that resilience can be learned. In fact I know it can. After experiencing acute depression I became an agoraphobic for 6 years. That was more than 20 years ago. It was a long difficult struggle but I clawed my way back.

  • I am a Language Assessment Consultant and I am also a Child Protection Focal Point.

  • I think Continuous Personal/Professional Development such as doing courses like this can help prepare us for what lies ahead and thus makes us more resilient

  • Generally it is defined as an ability to adapt to events

  • @PatKingston In fact, we had a staggeringly high completion rate.. maybe 70%. Normally surveys in our organisation are around 20%

  • In theory yes, in practice and in China... not so much

  • @BenTrupia-Melluish I have suggested it, but management have not acted on the suggestion yet.

  • @DavidE I think the middle manager can often be placed in an impossible position, having to represent management decisions and policy to staff, when they themselves do not agree with it. Knowing that everything can be improved by listening to the workers and acting on their advice, but being powerless to do so because of inadequate management from above...

  • Ideally I agree, but sometimes it is neccessary or even preferable to recruit from outside, depending on the circumstances. In these cases we had very little information to work with.

  • A lot of managment did leave or were pushed, current management is better but the same mistakes are being made and the circumstances which lead to the exodus are being repeated and I believe another exodus is going to occur next year.

  • Under my common name just Facebook and YouTube accounts.

This will take a while.. I will be slow but perhaps that is not a bad thing.

  • There was a Nike add several or maybe many years ago now with Micheal Jordon, talking about all the times he had failed... that sort of puts failure into perspective.

  • @HughReynolds I actually think the working environment can make a huge difference. So often management are presented with opertunities to make a difference, to make life easier or more enjoyable in even a small way and they make excuses instead of just doing it.
Work is not always easy, which in itself is not a bad thing, and no sometimes it is not fun, but...

  • Based on the creative solution presented at the end.. I did not have a clue!!!
Even through all the information was available to me.

  • It was not a negotiation that could succeed because of unrealistic conditions. Agreement could not be reached, and it was just about impossible to view the situation from Pat's perspective because it was very different than anticipated. I was the buyer in a very similar situation and successfully negotiated a very good deal, but the other side had time and...

  • Innovative and Professional

  • I reviewed a assignment from a person who was culturally very different from me, and yet our personal values are very similar.

  • I think he changed the way language is used. I think he would have a blog.. and hate twitter. “You speak an infinite deal of nothing.”
― William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

  • This is much better, this is how it should be done.

  • Perhaps a case study in doing everything wrong, but sadly not an exaggeration. I was just counselling a colleague who something similar happened too last week. I took the matter to senior management as her union representative but she would not authorize me to use her name. I was hoping that I could get senior management to basically tell the team leaders to...

  • I think this would be a very useful approach in a mentoring situation.

  • From a business perspective I have encountered Martha's attitude before, and from the owner of the business! Martha is missing the big picture, she is only focusing on the next possible sale which in scheme of things is quite small. The value of one sale to an organization is insignificant compared to the lifetime value of a customer. Having a social chatty...

  • Alex should schedule a performance review meeting with Mike. She needs to provide an accurate and documented assessment of his performance, and she needs to agree an action plan on what needs to be done to improve Mike's performance, which could requires some professional Development, for example it may a time management issue which could be resolved with...

  • I think firstly that poor performance needs to addressed in a timely manner.. if left unaddressed it will usually become worse and harder to address.
Secondly, I think that it is often easy to just blame the employee without getting to the root of the problem.. it is easier if the employee is not capable than it is if the employee was not given sufficient...

  • The biggest hit we often take when make a mistake or experience failure is to our confidence.. but truly confident people don’t let this damage their confidence, they learn and move on because mistakes and failure are part of life.. it is what we experienced not who we are.

  • I think that Management attitude very much dictates whether employees have a positive attitude. If our employees have a negative attitude the first place we should look at is ourselves as managers.

  • In my job I have no control of what I do, how I do it or when I do it.. it is stressful..

  • Facebook, Office 365 for work, and whatever learning platform the course uses

  • I would sum it up as engagement. Staff engagement is very important.

  • I think for many organizations wellbeing is a box ticking exercise and not really understood.. sometimes resources that are barely related to wellbeing are called wellbeing which marginalizes wellbeing.
Other times.. one size fits all approaches to well being maybe have a positive effect on those in the middle but for those whose motivation is at either end...

  • Grace should make contact with Danny and keep in touch.. engagement is the key

  • Records are useful in identifying patterns but mostly they are just telling us that we need to take action, but not really what we need to do and certainly not why.

  • My concern is that initiatives such as back to work interviews after short term absences can cause more problems than they solve if not handled very carefully..

  • Maybe a combination of the 3.. certainly creative. I think we need to be engaged with staff generally so that when their behavior becomes erratic or different than normal we notice and take proactive ad creative action.

  • We have performance reviews but they are inconsistent and not always appropriate. My view is that performance reviews should be linked to specific and tailored individual Professional Development plans.

  • Our induction changes regularly. I did mine 4 years ago so I don’t know the current process.

  • The induction process was too busy... too much information crammed in and difficult to keep it all straight. I think induction needs to be planned and spread over a period of time in a logically planed way

  • At first I felt comfortable especially during training, but part of the induction process is post training certification and I panicked and second guessed myself.. I got through on my last permitted attempt but it was very stressful

  • These days references have become certificates of service and as such are not very useful in themselves.

Sites from professional associations etc tend to be reputable and credible

  • I think option A. Business skills can be learnt, but not so much creativity.. I think this occurs naturally.
    ..

  • I think that culture makes a team successful, culture that needs to include a no blame culture.

  • There is obviously an issue affecting Danny, but it is difficult to speculate on what the route cause is.. it could be too much partying but that may well be a symptom too and not the root cause. It is probably stress related based on my experience with staff displaying similar behaviour... but whether this is related to personal issues or a toxic work...

  • I think having a checklist that reflects the requirements of the role is useful to keep one focused on the issues. Perhaps a secondary list reflecting what is required to be an organisational fit would also help. In looking for a fit within my department I tend to look for people with attributes that I lack, rather than those with similarities which I guess...

  • I suspect too that in part this is related to the desire to stay within one’s comfort zone, and we are comfortable with that with which we are familiar

  • I thought Wang was clear, I don’t think he had to bluntly say he could not work Saturday, I thought that was implied. At least that was how I would have interpreted it.

  • I don’t have Twitter and have never liked it. Micro blogs.. fragments of information.. and this is a major symptom of what is wrong with so much of society.. people are no longer informed.. they make decisions and judgments based on fragments of information.. judgements that destroy lives and change the course of the world all based on nothing more than...

  • We conducted a survey that was scathing.. more than 80% did not trust management.. more than 70% were actively looking for alternative employment.. we developed a 34 point plan to improve the staff relations and management did nothing.. did not even hit the desk of the divisional director.
The survey was accurate and around 60% of staff did leave within the...

  • I think it used to be giving people a fair go, and not taking anything too seriously, honesty, helping some in need, and maybe taking time to relax. Now I don't know.

  • I think we often lose sight of the fact that an interview is a two way process. We are are often anxious and hopeful of being offered a job that we want, but not every job is the right fit for us. I remember going to a job fair and talking to some representatives from a company who could not believe that I would come to a job fair and not bring my resume to...

  • What do you think others might be able to find out about you online? It depends if they use my long name or my short name, hopefully a respectful sincere person.
Who do you think can see this information? Does it matter? I limit who can view my FB page for example, but beyond this anybody can find information about me. I don't think it matters
    What would you...

I think we need to assume that potential employers, or people we would like to do business with can view our social presence. We need to always be mindful of this.

  • Reflection especially critical reflection is very underrated tool for not only learning but also for life.

  • I always or usually use multiple sources. Hopefully this allows me to look at the subject with multiple perspectives which allows me to see the big picture.

  • Businesses have processes to ensure that their product or service is fit for purpose, is of sufficient quality to reliably perform its function, and is created or delivered in sufficient quantity to mean market demand.
An example of a business process could be a manufacturing process, the raw materials and/or manufactured components are received and converted...

  • A market is a place where people buy and sell goods and services, this is true for a local street market or a global market.
An industry is a collective of manufacturers, buyers and sellers involved in a specific product or service, and perhaps related products and services.
Finding the right market or the niche for the new business.

  • I choose to use iPhone calendar because it is available, it is simple and not onerous, and I always have it with me. No other reason, and I don't know if there is any cultural element to it, but I do not think so.

  • I just use my iPhone calendar to note where I am working and what I am doing each day, along with any specific appointments I have.

  • These days I think using a job portal is perhaps the most effective

  • They complete staff appraisals which not fit for purpose in respect of all employees. Again a product of the one size fits all approach of modern management. They have well being policies which do not translate into action. I do not know if they record information or what they do with the information if they do.

  • He made the process of the staff appraisal more important than the underlying reason/purpose for the staff appraisal to be completed.

  • Sadly I could not tick any

  • Lack of real Control may have been the root cause, this in itself led to a lack of competence through not having procedures and training in place. The commitment to H&S appears to lack depth and be more of a box ticking exercise for PR reasons, rather than a real commitment to a safe working environment.
The information provided implies there was a lack of...

  • I think that the involvement of staff is vital. One of the common complaints received from staff is that management do not listen to and therefore respect their staff.
I don't which would be the most difficult to answer, I think it would depend on who one needed to ask as it is an excuse base culture and simple requests for information are met with a 'Why do...

  • Another very useful tool. Again it has a wide application beyond health and safety. I will transpose and upload 'the fish bone' later.

This is a very good technique. Why? is very useful question in a variety of circumstances, because it can cut through the surface and often emotive responses and get to the root cause of a problem, which is not always apparent at first.

  • Causes appear to have been lack of non-slip tiles, lack of non slip footwear, a rushed cleaning schedule which should be adjusted so kitchen staff are not working on wet floors, location and lack of safety protection in respect of the deep fryer.

  • i think that person-organisation fit was more of a consideration in the past when face to face interviews were the norm. I think it is more difficult in a world where apparent efficiency takes precedence and assessment of people has become a generic one size fits all approach.

  • This is exactly why I like face to face interviews when employing people, it gives one a better 'feel' for the person and helps us assess whether the person will fit in.
I think that we need to prepare a series of scenario based questions designed to give us an insight into the person's character and how they would deal with people and situations.

  • B has the most balanced experience across all areas. A has the best experience in one area only. C also has good experience in one area, but it is a different industry

  • I think it depends of the position being advertised. For example for a higher level candidate a headhunter may be used, but for a low level candidates a state-supported job center maybe a good option.

  • I had actually began the assignments for the first 2 components of this set of three courses and as such I was keeping more detailed reflections and bookmarking all of my posts. Therefore I was posting more than I am currently.
However, I am still learning from this course and building what I am learning into some new courses I am developing. Also, I did not...
