  • Many surprises indeed. I learned to explore more repertoire, adapt more to my pupil's needs. Thanks ABRSM.

    I'll use it! Good idea.

That's really important for communication (just think about Johari's Window)! Well.. it depends. If the parents know the music and its importance, I'll got the feedback from them. Otherwise I often got feedback from the pupil.

  • That's a nice overview towards 5 years learning! Thank you!

  • I usually trying to create some course-end concert, or some occasion to play in front of the pupil's family! If I found a possible good connection between two pupils I try to make them play a 4 hands piece.

  • I think that most of learning styles depends on how the pupil (young or adult) relates with other people/teacher. It's more like going deep into the mind of the pupil. If the pupil accept and rely on other person, then it will learn quite easily. Otherwise if he has an introverted behavior, well, it really needs long time to establish a good connection. If the...

  • Actually I'm already applying most of this ideas. But I should focus more on recordings and pictures of the posture. Thanks!

  • Recently I started to dislike social media... but it's undoubtedly a good way for business.

  • I found that youtube is really useful for pupils. And..if they have both acoustic piano and midi keyboard I usually make some interactive piano/theory games with max/msp.

  • I heard Laurel.. but probably it also depends from my Mac speakers: maybe this test should be made in an anechoic room with a completely flat/natural eq speakers. Furthermore we could investigate on the psycho-acoustic side: how much seeing "Laurel" as the first result can influence our perception?

  • That's extremely important and interesting.

  • I think that share the pressures of being a musician is really important. But not in a negative way, it's just important for a pupil to understand this topic in order to create it's own conscious perception of the musician's world.

  • very useful infos!

  • That's a great advice. I never thought about this. That makes both parts (parents and teacher) at ease. I'll certainly use it.

  • I think the most difficult technique to explain (for piano) Is the relaxation of muscles. Linked to this is how to independently use (and therefore relax) the muscles of hand, forearm, arm, shoulder. I think every pupil is different..after the teacher's explanation someone find it easy and "natural", someone else will find out by chance when muscles are not...

  • The first pupil need to focus on speed problems of single bars. Speed problems are often related to technical difficulties, and phrasing difficulties. The second one need to focus on the emission, how to produce a nice timbre.. how to "speak" with his instrument.

  • I don't know if it's related to the fact that I'm also composer, but.. all of my students (young and adult) at some point of them paths ask me to hear something they've composed.
In adult students I'm always trying to let them understand what they want from the music (stability, movement, happiness, sadness..), and find a way together to create the expected...

  • Context and family are the most important things when a pupil is learning an instrument. One of my students got a family where the father is so musical, but both of parents are almost always out of home for work. I notice that when the father help the child to study during the week, he improve a lot, compared to when he doesn't have support at all by family. I...

  • I'm keep trying to base my philosophy on the student's musical and personal growth.

After create a solid ground of technique, ear training and musicality (which can be achieved in many different ways) the pupils must be feel free to express themselves without barriers or schemes. The teacher role is to emphasize the attitudes and talents of the students,...

  • I totally agree with every single word of Mr. Williams. The problem is that sometimes we lost the the emotions path.. and start to think in a sort of "algorithmic" way. But Music is emotion..Thank you. Much to reflect upon.

  • I think that one of the pillars of education is the student's family.
I found that if the family supports the student, then the results come quite easily. If the family doesn't follow the student during the week, and doesn't give importance to Music.. then is really hard to achieve goals.
By the way the evaluation process is very interesting, and let me...
