Pandemic chapter 3
In this episode of Pandemic we see the epidemic unfolding in Mendona.
Alarming and critical information emerges:
- The disease has a 75% fatality from the infection… more than expected and more than historical norms for this kind of disease
- The social and security situation is becoming difficult to manage
- Health services are overwhelmed
- Shortages of critical medical and security resources are emerging
As the outbreak progresses, the police receive a break that indicates that this outbreak is potentially not natural but deliberate. Someone calls the police investigation office and says that he worked in a secret lab where the germs have come from and has critical information. The callers' location is traced and police officers are dispatched to investigate.
At this stage in the epidemic, it is worth considering some important questions related to public health preparedness for infectious disease events.
After watching this episode of Pandemic, please discuss the following questions in the comments section below
- What kind of biological agents could be used deliberately to cause harm?
- What are the categories of bioterrorism attack?
- What type of antibiotics should be ready to manufacture or supply to prevent the rate of fatality?
- How do public health clinicians trace the origin of attack?
- What facilities are needed to contain/restrict people in an area and assist them to treat and save their lives?
