How to make your next career move

Your career isn't something that just happens. It's something you can develop. This National Career Development Month, learn how you can take an active role in shaping what happens next.

When it comes to your career, you don’t have to start over to move forward. A career move could be anything. Changing roles, getting promoted, future-proofing your skill sets or moving to a new industry.

Ahead of National Career Development Month, we want to help you take a more active role in shaping what’s next in your career. That could be progressing in your current role, changing directions, developing new skills or preparing for opportunities that haven’t arrived yet. To do that though, your first step is to decide what your next career move will be.

What’s your next career move?

We recently conducted a survey among our learner community and discovered some really interesting results. Among the FutureLearners who responded, 14.8% said getting skills for a first professional role was the main reason for being on the platform, 11.2% said they wanted to change industries or careers whereas  7.1% said they learn to upskill for a promotion or salary negotiation. Whatever your motivations for learning are, here’s how you make the next step a right one.

Want to move up?

If you’re thinking about moving into a management role, depending on where you currently are in your career, that could mean becoming a first-time manager or simply taking on more responsibility.

While going from an individual contributor to a manager can be daunting, focusing on developing the right set of skills can support your next steps. Leadership and communication skills can help you manage and support teams, delegate tasks, take on more responsibility and lead confidently and responsibly.

Want to move across?

The key to a successful lateral career move (i.e. moving to a new role that’s at the same level as your current job) is making the most of what you already know. That’s where your transferable skills come in.

While different industries and positions require specific skills, most professions are looking for people who are organised, adaptable, resourceful, and who can clearly communicate with team members and relevant stakeholders, meet deadlines and manage their time effectively.

To make your move as smooth as possible, build on your soft skills and transfer what you do already know into your new role, industry or area of expertise.

Want to future-proof your path?

According to our recent community survey, 20.7% of learners on the platform said the biggest fear they had about their career was their skills becoming outdated due to AI or automation. 16.4% also said they were concerned about career stagnation and getting stuck in a role.

AI, sustainability and other digital technologies are transforming the world of work and you can future-proof your path by developing these technical skills and building the knowledge you have.

Want to change direction?

If you’re looking to go in a completely different direction, the knowledge and experience you’ve gained along the way is a great foundation to build on. That said, when you’re ready to explore new subjects, discover our range of range of online microcredentials and degrees and take your career wherever you want it to go.
