Welcome to Week 1

Week 1 educator is welcoming learners to the week 1 of the course explaining what will be covered in this part of the course

In this video, this week’s educator and the lead educator for this course Conor, is talking about your learning opportunities in week 1 of the course

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the global pandemic

AMR is the various ways in which microbes (primarily bacteria) render antimicrobial therapy (e.g. antibiotics) ineffective. Antimicrobials are used in every country to stave off infection and are crucial for public health in general but specifically for post-surgery recovery and protecting immunocompromised people. AMR is rising rapidly with recent figures putting global deaths attributed to AMR at 5 million every year. Understanding the mechanisms of AMR, how we can detect it and what technologies can help us do that is crucial if we want to bring this number down in the future.

Do leave any comments you might have at this stage in the comments section below:

  • what are your expectations of this week?
  • are you already familiar with the fundamentals of AMR?
  • what are you hoping to achieve by the end of the course?
