International Considerations: Product Registration

Product registration globally is at times overlooked when developing products. However, it’s an important topic to consider because it includes several areas.

When building a brand with the idea of global expansion there are a few things to review. Depending on the global markets you are considering product registration requirements can differ from country to country. Product Registration requirement beyond just the product ingredient. It includes product testing, product claims, packaging both primary and secondary. Product descriptions, language, and even font sizes can be included in the review depending on the country. Additionally, some countries require the products to be reviewed by a locally approved scientific person in an organized group. It’s important when developing your product you consider potential global markets and be aware of any product registration requirement. Product registration is both timely and costly therefore, consideration should be given early in the process.

Several years ago I launched a brand in the US one of the key considerations when developing the beauty brand was the product requirement for registration in Canada, which was slightly different for French-speaking Canadian regions versus English speaking region. Another experience with global product registration is the designation of products positioned as Natural, or Organic may have different testing and supply chain protocols
