Welcome to the course “Cancer Fundamentals: Introduction to Basic and Clinical Oncology”, an immersive course designed to deepen your understanding of cancer biology, diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.

Throughout this 3-week course, you will engage with a diversity of topics. The first week will cover an extensive introduction to the basics of cancer, exploring a case of a lung cancer patient. In the second week, you will deepen your understanding of skin cancer, one of the most common forms of cancer worldwide. Finally, in Week 3, you will find out more on head and neck oncology, examining the complex anatomy, diagnostics and treatment of cancers in this region.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid foundation to understand the intricacies of cancer and be better prepared to contribute to the advancements in this challenging field. Join us on this journey into the fascinating world of oncology, where science, compassion, and innovation come together to improve lives.

Each week you will learn by engaging in different activities, such as watching videos, reading articles, doing exercises, reflecting on the exercises and discussing questions with other learners.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid foundation to understand the intricacies of cancer and be better prepared to contribute to the fight against this devastating disease.

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Describe the overarching principles of cancer development according to the Hallmarks of Cancer, diagnostics, and treatment;
  • Explain the steps taken in the approach of cancer patients, with a focus on the initial presentation, the most appropriate diagnostics and treatment options;
  • Identify specific types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and melanoma;
  • Describe prevention strategies and treatments of different types of skin cancer;
  • Identify the differential diagnostics of neck masses;
  • Describe treatment principles of head and neck cancer.
