What’s more, it can transport nitrogen for discharge or transport nitrogen to other substances in order to transform into other substances containing nitrogen. It can also be used for glycogenesis when our body needs glucose. As the precursor of antioxidant, it promotes antioxidant capacity inside the body. Through discharging or transporting the amidogens, it also promotes the acid-base equilibrium in the body. Additionally, it is the main energy source for fast-division cells, such as intestinal cells or immunocyte cells.

Glutamine can maintain the normal function of intestinal cells and it also helps the activation of immunocyte cells. Previous studies have shown that glutamine level will decrease when our body is in traumatic or under metabolism stress condition. Under these stress conditions, the glutamine level in body fluid or body tissue will decrease. The amount of glutamine decrease is related to the recovery rate from trauma or diseases. Low glutamine level represents poor recovery rate and high mortality rate. In other words, if we could enhance the glutamine level in our body, it could possibly help increase recovery rate. Therefore, glutamine can also become an indicator of conditional essential amino acids.

As we mentioned that glutamine is non-essential amino acids, our body could synthesis on its own. But under certain specific condition, such as traumatic stress, infection or post-surgery, glutamines will become an essential amino acid. So glutamine is a conditional essential amino acid. The supplementation of glutamine is not necessarily in normal circumstances. As we’ve mentioned, it exists in protein and the amount of glutamine could be obtained by our daily protein diets. Besides, our body could synthesis glutamine on our own. Normally, the generation and utilization of glutamine should be able to reach the balance. It is not necessary to supplement it additionally. However, it will be different from the situation of diseases. Our body’s immune function will be activated when facing disease conditions.
