Contrary Results on Glutamine Supplementation

This article caught researchers’ interest and many researchers had investigated more studies on the supplement of glutamine. Researchers want to find out the effect of glutamine supplementation on surgical patients, intensive care unit patients or other disease patients. Based on another latest article, researchers from a surgical intensive care unit at a multiple hospital in the USA have done a similar study. But in this study, they excluded those patients with organ failure and serious diseases. That is, the study focus on illness was not as severe compared to the research mentioned earlier. In both research, they used the intravenous approach to glutamine supplementation and explored those patients’ adaptability to glutamine and evaluate safety of glutamine supplementation.

The results of the researches revealed that after the supplement of glutamine, patients’ 6-month mortality rates and infection rates did not increase. This result proved that glutamine does not increase death rates. Although glutamine supplementation didn’t show plenty of advantages, it did not increase the death rate and caused negative impacts on the patients. Therefore, we know that the supplement of glutamine is safe for those patients in the intensive care unit. We have already talked about glutamine’s impact on various diseases. From the previous steps, we talked about glutamine’s advantages. As a matter of fact, a lot of researches revealed that patients with the supplement of glutamine on many different diseases response to a positive effect on their metabolic conditions.

On the other hand, some research do reveal that the supplementary of glutamine cause some negative impacts. The reason for this opposite results from different researches is highly possible for the different glutamine supplying time, different dosages, or different levels of illness seriousness. All of these factors affect the final results of the research. For patients with cancer, and patients with a critical illness, the supplement of glutamine might have some negative impact. Therefore, we should pay extra attention when applying glutamine to these patients. Strict assessment and evaluation are required. Otherwise, unexpected negative effects might occur.

After the study mention in the previous step, Prof. Yeh explains another trial experiment. In these cases, patients were not in severe organ failure or severe disease. The results showed glutamine supplementation does not increase patients’ death rates, though no significant benefits toward patients also.

From this study, we know the controversial situation of glutamine supplementation. In conclusion, the reason for this opposite results from different researches is highly possible for the different glutamine supplying time, different dosages, or different levels of illness seriousness.
